Allan Moffat, OBE, joins BTS's Team Safety

Veteran
touring car champion Allan Moffat, OBE, has joined Boylan Traffic Solutions as
part of its Team Safety program. The program
- spearheaded by performance car driver Peter Boylan and motorsport commentator Neil
Crompton - aims to help reduce road trauma by increasing awareness about the
safety message in the wider community. Boylan
Traffic Solutions managing director Peter Boylan said Allan's knowledge and
driving experience made him an ideal ambassador for the Team Safety message. "I'm
thrilled that Allan has singled us out as a company that is serious about
safety and sourcing the very best road safety products," he said. Allan said
too many people were complacent about the safety message. "Every
weekend, we hear about young people who have tragically sent themselves to an
early grave," he said. "I figured
out very early on in my career that I only had one neck. "Although, I
was sometimes criticised for being too cautious in my driving career, I'm only here in one piece now
because I never over-stepped the line."

Giant step ... the West Gate BG800 deployment
BarrierGuard 800 deployment a world first
A groundbreaking deployment of BarrierGuard 800 on Melbourne's West Gate Bridge is set to re-write the manuals on how safety barriers can be installed and utilised. In a world first, the BG800 is being deployed using innovative technology that temporarily fuses the steel guard to the bridge deck and existing permanent concrete barrier.Boylan Traffic Solutions national operations manager Wayne Duckworth said the steel barrier was chosen for its lightweight properties and stellar safety rating."With any steel structure such as the West Gate, weight is a critical factor," Wayne said."The BarrierGuard 800 is the lightest high-speed barrier available in Australia and it's also the highest rated for safety, so it was a natural choice," he said. The installation is being carried out by John Holland Construction on behalf of the West Gate Bridge Strengthening Alliance. The iconic West Gate Bridge - a critical section of Melbourne's M1 road network - is currently being strengthened to improve its long-term sustainability and increase its capacity to five lanes of traffic each way. The project is part of the Monash-CityLink-West Gate Upgrade - a $1.39 billion infrastructure investment by the Victorian Government. The West Gate Bridge section of the project is jointly funded by the Federal and State governments. "The technical complexity of this deployment has been a giant step for the BTS team," Wayne said. "It's rewarded us with invaluable expertise which, we anticipate, will be highly regarded in the industry in the future,'' he said. Boylan Traffic Solutions is the sole Australian distributor of the BarrierGuard 800. Young motorsport stars shine
Above: Chaz Mostert leads the line up in the Australian Formula Ford Championship. Fifteen-year-old Liam Sager stunned the established Australian Formula Ford Championship
stars recently by recording the sixth fastest practice time on his national
series debut . Sager, a
CAMS Rising Star and the youngest driver in the May 15 field at Winton, is only
scheduled to compete in two rounds of the 2010 national series as he focuses on
the Victorian state title. Boylan
Traffic Solutions is a sponsor of CAMS Rising Stars, a program that aims to
help talented young drivers reach the pinnacle of motor sport - the FIA Formula
1 World Championship or the World Rally Championship. The
Queenslander set the fourth fastest time in the opening practice session, and
ended the day
sixth on combined times - less than four tenths of a second behind championship
favourite Chaz
Mostert. Team-mate
Matthew Brabham ended the day just four tenths of a second behind Sager, which
left him in 14th
place - such is the closeness of the 2010 field. Jack Le
Brocq, who starred earlier in the season by taking points on debut at Albert
Park, had a challenging
opening day at Winton, ending the day 18th overall. CAMS Rising
Stars points tally to date in the Formula Ford Championship: Matthew

James Moffat out of luck at Winton
Tough weekend ... a first corner clash destroyed James Moffat's hopes of a podium finish
James Moffat
endured a tough weekend in Round 3 of the V8 Supercar Development Series at
Winton Motor Raceway. The Norton 360 Ford Rising Stars driver looked to be in line for a podium
finish when he ran out luck in the final race of the weekend. James qualified well in fourth position and despite ordinary starts in races
one and two, still managed to secure third and fifth place finishes, giving him
a fourth place starting position for the final race of the weekend. He made his best start of the meeting and moved straight into third position,
but an exhaust mount broken in a first corner clash forced him to the pits for
repairs and destroyed any hope of a good result. "It was a tough weekend for us, but I think despite everything we made some
good steps in the right direction," James said. "The car is
easier to drive and we proved that, by setting the fastest lap in the final
race. Now we need to work on making it more consistent.''

World's Largest Lesson a record breaker
Above: Drivers line up to start the record-breaking challenge
More than
360 student drivers and instructors took part in the World's Largest Driving
Lesson staged simultaneously at venues across Australia on April 28.
The event
- a world first - launched a month of road safety activities
leading up to Fatality Free Friday on May 28.
Fatality
Free Friday organiser Russell White said the world challenge, staged at 10
towns and cities throughout Australia, highlighted the importance of reducing
fatalities and crash-related injuries on our roads.
"Professional training of new drivers is a key component in reducing road
trauma, particularly among young drivers," Russell said.
The students
practised smooth steering and driving techniques, safe following distances,
cornering, reversing and parking.
"The number
of participants is now being verified and the record will be announced shortly ... with the intention to beat it next year," Russell
said.
