RTA warning on incorrect barrier installations

As a company which hires out many types of road barriers - including plastic water-filled barriers - we wish to alert our customers to a WorkCover NSW document which addresses concerns about the incorrect installation of these products.
The safety alert advises that the RTA is currently reviewing the acceptance status for a number of older barrier products, including plastic water-filled barriers.
The report advises that plastic barriers should not be used in situations ``where other accepted barrier products would provide better protection for workers and road users''.
It goes on to say: ``Generally, water-filled barriers have large dynamic deflections when impacted and other barrier types are available with much lower dynamic deflections and in addition may offer better containment. Isolated and incorrectly installed plastic contained water-filled barrier units have not been demonstrated to contain a vehicle and if struck and displaced, the barrier, and possibly the vehicle, may strike any road workers in the vicinity of the unit.''

       Low-cost speed advisory product launch

A reminder to all our NSW-based customers about the 2009 Safety Show to be held at Sydney Showground (Sydney Olympic Park) from October 27-29.
It's a perfect opportunity to learn about all the latest safety solutions and concepts on offer.
Boylan Traffic Solutions will be there, showcasing  SpeedCheck - Australia's first low-cost speed advisory radar sign. There'll also be literature and video footage available on live crash tests of the groundbreaking BarrierGuard 800 - Australia's highest-rating road barrier.
SpeedCheck  is widely used in the US where it has been found to effectively slow traffic and curb fatalities. On California's Highway 101, accident numbers were reduced by up to 58 per cent following a safety initiative which included the installation of SpeedCheck signs in known blackspots.
The Safety Show will feature more than 1200 new products and hundreds of safety experts. Of particular interest, will be a series of six daily WorkCover NSW Workshops. Don't forget to come and say hello at our stand.

UK designer shares his knowledge with industry experts

Industry engineers, project managers and state government officials turned out in force recently for two demonstration days for the BarrierGuard 800 - Australia's highest-rating safety barrier.
The events - held in Brisbane and Sydney - were staged by Boylan Traffic Solutions to demonstrate the product's state-of-the-art features.
The BG800's UK designer - Steve Powell of Highway Care - was on hand to answer questions as a road crew deployed the barrier in a "mock" site scenario.
BTS national operations manager Wayne Duckworth said the product's ease of deployment, low transportation costs and 110km/h safety rating made it an attractive option for a wide range of construction projects.

Gatton deployment saves on transport costs

The BarrierGuard 800 is protecting workers and motorists at Gatton

A recent deployment of 680m of BarrierGuard 800 to a site at Gatton, 40km south of Toowoomba, highlighted one of the key product features of the prefabricated steel barrier - it's ease of transportation.
BTS Queensland sales executive Craig Rush said Roadtek saved about $15,000 in transport and delivery costs by choosing the BG800 over a concrete barrier.
``On this job, it worked out at about a third of the cost of concrete to install and deliver - a significant saving,'' he said.
``Plus, they were very impressed at how quick it was deploy, minimising disruption to traffic and workers.''

                         Safety seminar's mock trial

The Civil Contractors Federation of NSW staged its inaugural OH&S Seminar recently which attracted more than 100 delegates from all over the state.
Sponsored by Boylan Traffic Solutions, the seminar aimed to provide practical tips and information on OH&S to contractors and staff within the industry.
The seminar included a mock trial facilitated by former WorkCover lawyers.
The trial scenario - a significant work injury caused by a traffic management issue on a road construction site - resonated with many in the room and highlighted the need for vigilance at all times.
