A native of Colorado,
Miriam Olin
grew up in Centennial, Colorado. She is currently finishing her senior year with a major in International Affairs with an emphasis on the Middle East. After graduation she plans on finding a job that not only pays the bills, but allows her to satisfy her love of travel.
Miriam is currently involved with Students for Israel, Amnesty International, and teaching fitness classes on campus. She is pursuing a Certificate in Jewish Studies to learn and understand Jewish culture from an academic perspective. Plus, completing a Certificate helped her satisfy Core requirements while adding an additional accreditation on her transcript.
When asked why Jewish Studies is important at CU, she said "It's important to educate students about a diversity of cultures and religions. I think it helps promote greater understanding and compassion for all the world's cultures."
When asked about how the Program in Jewish Studies has influenced her university experience she says, "There are always certain classes and teachers in college that you'll never forget. The classes I've taken for the Jewish Studies Certificate have been some of my favorite. I loved Professor Levey's class on the Arab/Israeli conflict, and Professor Aviv's class on Global Secular Jewish Societies. It has been fascinating to learn so much about Judaism and the history of a country that is so prevelant in the news today."
Help us ensure Jewish Studies continues to reach a diverse group of students with a donation to the Program in Jewish Studies or one of the many scholarships we provide.
Donations can be made online at www.cufund.org or
contact Kimberly Bowman, Associate Director of Development at the University of Colorado Foundation at 303.541.1446.
Thank you!

Together with Sharon Kinoshita (Professor of Literature, University of California Santa Cruz), Brian Catlos has been awarded funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities to direct their third biennial NEH Summer Institute for University and College Professors in Barcelona, Spain in July 2012. The theme will be "Networks and Knowledge in the Medieval Muslim-Christian-Jewish Mediterranean." This Institute, like the very successful previous editions, will gather 24 American professors and graduate students for 4 weeks of intensive work in Barcelona, Spain, with faculty including leading scholars of different aspects of Christian-Muslim-Jewish relations in the medieval Mediterranean across a range of disciplines.
The Institute is organized under the auspices of the Mediterranean Seminar, with the sponsorship and support of the UC Santa Cruz Institute for Humanities Research, the UC Mediterranean Studies MRP, the Spanish Ministry of Culture, the Archive of the Crown of Aragon, the Pompeu Fabra University, the Consejo Superior de Investigactiones Cientifcas, and other institutions in Spain and the US.
Nick Underwood, PhD Student in History and Jewish Studies and our Administrative Coordinator, participated in the Steiner Summer Program at the National Yiddish Book Center. He also was selected to participate in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's 2011 Seminar "Introduction to Holocaust Studies through the Records of the International Tracing Service Collection." Nick also wrote a review essay for Volume 5 (2012) of Images: A Journal of Jewish Art and Visual Culture entitled "Glimpses of a Puzzling Phenomenon: Robert Capa and Jewish History." Nick has also been very involved in organizing the Rocky Mountain Interdisciplinary History Conference that is being held on the CU Boulder campus this coming weekend.
Jamie Polliard, Assistant Director of the Program in Jewish Studies, has been selected to participate in the Rabbis for Human Rights Hands-On Human Rights Tour to Israel and the West Bank in November. Jamie will be using this experience to help develop a Global Seminar to Israel in conjunction with CU's Study Abroad Program and possibly the University of Illinois with Professor Rachel Havrelock. Jamie will be blogging about her experience. Watch our newsletter and website for details.

Through Soviet Jewish Eyes: Photography, War and the Holocaust September 8 - October 22, 2011 Opening reception, Wednesday, September 7, 6-8PM CU Art Museum, University of Colorado Boulder The Program in Jewish Studies and the CU Art Museum invite you to the opening of the exhibition, Through Soviet Jewish Eyes: Photography, War and the Holocaust, curated by David Shneer, professor of history and director of the Program in Jewish Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder and Lisa Tamiris Becker, director of the CU Art Museum.
Through Soviet Jewish Eyes shifts our vision of WWII by showing it through the lens of Soviet photojournalists. The exhibition presents 58 photographs, printed over six decades, by the most important Soviet photojournalists including Evgenii Khaldei, Georgii Zelma and Dmitrii Baltermants. These photographs took arresting war images and were the first to document the liberation of Nazi atrocity sites. The exhibition presents photographs that span the Nazi-Soviet war, from June 22, 1941 until V-Day on May 9, 1945. An opening section contextualizes the war-time images within the Constructivist and Socialist Realist traditions of Soviet photography in the 1920s and 1930s. Canonical images appear side by side with photographs that have never been exhibited. A large number of Soviet photographers were Jewish and the exhibition asks what this might have meant when confronting the war and Nazi atrocities through Soviet Jewish eyes.
The exhibition includes archival materials, including contact sheets, glass negatives, scrap books, diaries, Soviet publications, and the photographers' personal book maquettes.
This exhibit will be on display through October 22, 2011. CU Art Museum hours are Monday-Friday 10AM to 5PM, Tuesday 10AM to 7PM and Saturday 12PM to 4PM. For additional information, visit http://cuartmuseum.colorado.edu or contact the Program in Jewish Studies at 303.492.7143.
As part of this exhibit, Professor Shneer will be presenting a special book talk and signing at the Colorado Photographic Art Center at Belmar in Lakewood, CO on Thursday, September 8 at 7:30PM. The cost is $5 or $3 for CPAC-WWA members. CU and DU students are free with student id's. RSVPs are required and can me made by emailing info@workingwithartists.org or calling 303-837-1341. He will also be giving a lecture and guided gallery tour on Thursday, September 15 at 7PM at the CU Art Museum in Boulder. Space is limited and RSVPs are required. For more information and to RSVP, please email Jamie.Polliard@colorado.edu or call 303.492.7143.
Funding for this exhibition is generously provided in part by the HBB Foundation, the Arts and Culture (ACE) Student Enrichment Fees and by the CU Art Museum Benefactors and Members, Association for Jewish Studies Legacy Heritage Fund and donors to the Program in Jewish Studies. back to the top |
