Welcome Students, Faculty & Staff...

We hope everyone had a fantastic summer and are refreshed and energized to start the academic year.

The Program in Jewish Studies is excited to announce several new initiatives, classes and programs aimed at turning CU into a top ten Jewish Studies program. We encourage students to register for the certificate, so they can have access to special scholarships, events and other programs only open to our certificate students.  We are proud to say that four students graduated in the first Jewish Studies graduation ceremony in CU's history this past May.

Stay tuned to our website for details but here are some brief updates on what to look for in the coming year:

  • The Program in Jewish Studies is offering five new courses for Fall 2009: Women, Gender and Sexuality in Judaism; Biblical Hebrew; Modern History of Jews Under Islam; Jewish Law; Modern European Jewish Thought.  We are working to add even more new courses for the Spring 2010: Modern Jewish Thought, The Lives of Secret Jews, Modern Jewish Literature, and Arab-Israeli Conflict.
  • We have submitted a proposal to add a second study abroad site for University of Colorado students at Tel Aviv University. We hope to gain approval for this initiative and have Tel Aviv as a partner for CU beginning Fall 2010.
  • The faculty have proposed making Jewish Studies a degree granting unit with a BA in Jewish Studies and minors in Jewish Studies and Hebrew Studies.
  • Jewish Studies is spearheading a year-long series of talks, performances, lectures, and courses called MoVeRs: Jewish Mavericks, Visionaries & Rebels.  Visiting scholars and artists include Yuri Lane, Beatbox performer who recently performed at Davos; Daniel Itzkovitz, who studies the work of comedienne Sarah Silverman; and Anna Torres, a Harvard student who worked in the Emma Goldman archives and spends her summers doing cityscape murals in inner city neighborhoods. The series will also feature our own CU faculty Zilla Goodman and Robby Adler-Peckerar.
We look forward to an exciting year of learning with all of you.  Please come visit our offices as our doors are always open!

Enjoy the year ~

Ride with Jewish Studies in the Buffalo Bicycle Classic...

BicycleThe Buffalo Bicycle Classic was a dream project of Todd Gleeson, Dean of CU Boulder's College of Arts and Sciences (home to the Program in Jewish Studies), and some of the Boulder region's most community-minded business leaders and philanthropists.
The goal was to create an event that would bring much needed funding to students in the College of Arts and Sciences, and that would also be a unifying experience for the University of Colorado, the Boulder area, and the Colorado community at large. Since 2003, this fun and active fundraiser has raised more than $1M to support student scholarships!

Join the Program in Jewish Studies Team this year for a fun day of bike riding through beautiful Boulder that includes a continental breakfast, rides for all ability levels and families (14 mile Little Buff, 35, 50, 70 and 100 mile courses) and a post ride party!  As a member for the Program in Jewish Studies Team you can select any ride you would like to participate in (the Team does not have to ride the same course). Details and descriptions can be found at www.buffalobicycleclassic.com/routes/

As the challenging economy has made the need even greater for such scholarship programs, help us reach this year's goal of $300,000.

To help support this effort and encourage more students to participate, the Program in Jewish Studies will cover 1/2 of the registration costs for the first 10 Certificate students to contact Jamie Polliard at Jamie.Polliard@colorado.edu.
