2009-2010 Baer Scholarship Recipient
Carly Coons
Carly Coons comes to CU from Greenwood Village, Colorado and is pursuing a major in International Affairs with a Religious Studies minor. She plans on graduating in 2012 and hopes to pursue a career that involves travel while working within the Jewish community.
In addition to being our featured student in the Certificate program, we are excited to announce that Carly was awarded the 2009-2010 Sue & Barry Baer Scholarship in Jewish Studies. This annual scholarship is awarded to the most promising student in the Certificate in Jewish Studies Program each year.
An excellent student, Carly is very involved in Hillel, serving on the student board, the Shabbat committee and helping run the monthly community service program. She also recently wrote the Reform service that Hillel leads on Friday evenings.
"The Certificate in Jewish Studies is an important part of my University education as it helps me apply things I have learned through my 12 years in religious school to contemporary issues like gender and society, international relations, and how Jewish culture incorporates the lessons from the Holocaust and continues to grow and evolve around the world. The classes in the program expand my academic knowledge while helping me apply this knowledge to my personal life and current world issues."
Congratulations Carly on being selected as the 2009-2010 Baer Scholarship recipient!

Year-End Message from Professor David Shneer...
|
It is hard to believe that my first year at CU and as the director for the Program in Jewish Studies is already coming a close. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the faculty and staff of the University for being so welcoming, encouraging and enthusiastic. Everyone's contributions have allowed us to succeed in ways that our executive committee (Zilla Goodman, Janet Jacobs, Paul Shankman, Davide Stimilli, and myself) could not have dreamed of when we put together our strategic plan last summer.
A few fun facts I would like to share:
1. We now have 62 students enrolled in the Certificate Program and will be spending the summer developing a proposal to create a major/minor program in Jewish Studies;
2. We have developed five new courses on the books for Fall 2009 (Writers & Filmmakers of Eastern Europe; Jewish Philosophy seminar: Rosenzweig; Biblical Hebrew; Jews Under Islam; Women, Gender & Sexuality in Judaism) and doubled course offerings from last year. We owe this to our dedicated faculty who have been willing to develop these courses; the Deans of Arts & Sciences who have allowed us to grow to meet student demands; to our donors and funders, who recognize the potential in our program; and to our students, who are filling our courses, demonstrating how important this program is tothe long term success of Arts & Sciences at CU.
3. Our e-newsletter now has more than 2,000 subscribers around the world.
4. With the dedicated help of Mary McGee, our foundation officer at the CU Foundation, we have secured a grant from the American Israeli Cooperative Enterprise which will allow us to host Professor Zach Levey from the University of Haifa next year; a future grant from the Posen Foundation that will be used to hire a senior instructor in secular Jewish Studies; individual gifts of more than $20,000; plus we have submitted applications for two additional grants that will be used to support curriculum and program growth.
5. Our students are consistently praising Jewish Studies for being, in their words, "an oasis at a large university," "a unit that always knows how to help when I need it," "some of the best teachers on campus," "and willing to go the extra mile to help me find information I need."
We would like to acknowledge our donors and funders, who in these challenging economic times, have truly made so much possible in our first year:
Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado American Israeli Cooperative Enterprise Bugdanowitz-Toltz Family Philanthropy Fund Hannah S. & Samuel A. Cohn Memorial Foundation The Community Foundation Serving Boulder County G & R Quit Partnership Gerald & Lorna Gray Family Fund Jewish Community Foundation of Colorado Margolis & Associates

Congratulations to our Certificate Graduates....

Deborah Caldwell is graduating with a degree in Anthropology. Originally from Louisiana she calls Broomfield home. She decided to to complete a Certificate in Jewish Studies as it coincided with her interest in anthropology and archaeology of the Middle East, particularly Israel. She plans to continue her studies with graduate school in the near future. "The courses I have taken withing the Jewish Studies program have proven to be some of the most instructional, challenging, and thought-provoking courses of my college career."
Nathaniel Edelstein graduated in December with a degree in Broadcast News. He is currently working in New York for Major League Baseball Productions and hopes to make a career in the sports world either in broadcasting or public relations. Nathaniel spent his junior year abroad at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and hopes someday to make his way back to Israel. "I knew that attaining a Certificate in Jewish Studies would give me an opportunity to explore careers outside of my major and would also add to my resume in pursuing a career in journalism. Most importanly, I knew it would make me a more well-rounded person. My college experience would not have been complete without the Program in Jewish Studies. It allowed me to learn more about an area of study I had an interest in and the courses were always interesting with insightful and engaging professors."
Joel Pratt is graduating with a degree in English. A very involved student and a former Baer Scholar, Joel is hoping to stay in Boulder and continue to teach and work within the Jewish community with possible long term goals of attending Hebrew Union College. Joel feels the Certificate in Jewish Studies has been "a natural extension of his discovery while at CU."
Hannah Shakin completes her time at CU with a dual degree in Spanish and Psychology. Unsure of what the immediate future holds, Hannah is grateful for all that the Program in Jewish Studies has provided. "College was my first opportunity to learn about and become involved in the Jewish community and culture. I think that the more diverse a curriculum a university can offer, the better. I would love to see CU continue to expand academic offerings of different cultures and religions."
