Red Apple |
A little red apple
Hung high in a tree
I looked up at it
And it looked down at me
"Come down, please" I called
And what do you suppose---
That little red apple
Dropped right on my nose! |

This Week at the Davidson Farmer's Market! | |
The Market will taste apples for the first time this season. Audrey's Produce will be at Market in the morning with a variety of mountain apples, Asian Pears and peaches. It's going to be a fruity Market, not just because of our cast of characters, but because you'll find, apples, pears, berries, peaches and melons - all in one place! It's a special time of year. Eat up!
Pickling cucumbers are in abundance. Check out the home pickling recipes on the left. Forget the store-bought, jar pickles. Making your own pickles allows you to experiment and get them just the way you like 'em.
Canning tomatoes may be found at the Barbee booth. Nows the time to make sauces and salsas so you may enjoy these flavor-packed tomatoes during the fall and winter when you're craving them.
Butternut squash and green beans are here this week; corn, sweet potatoes and okra too.
Chef Anthony, Flatiron Kitchen & Taphouse will be in the heart of the Market giving demos at 9 and 10 a.m., featuring Cotton Mill Mushrooms Tree Oyster Mushrooms. Don't miss this special dish. It's going to be a local treat.
Kids Club kids will be making Lavender Sugar tomorrow. Our Lavender Lady, Mrs. Rita, was very kind to donate five lavender bundles for this fun activity. Lavender sugar can be used in cupcakes and other baked treats and even sprinkled on shortbread or pound cakes. Come by the Kids Club table to make some for yourself or to give as a gift.
CrossFit Davidson has organized a Market Outing this Saturday. They are joining for breakfast at Toast, then heading to the Market to shop; ending with a WOD (workout of the day) back at the Box. Give it up for CrossFit Davidson for coming-up with this hip summer outing!
Find a full list of Market offerings right here. View it, print it, share it.
See ya at the Market,

Big Oak Story Time | |
A few weeks ago Caiden our 4 year old grandson and I were off to the farm to sort out and load some calves to take to the processor. We have Charolais (white cattle) and Angus (black cattle). He informed me on the way to the farm that he was keeping all the black cows for himself and we were only going to be able to load the white ones. Hey, I'm in charge here not the 4 year old grandson, so it went in one ear and out the other. So we get there and he and I call all the cows up and get ready to sort out the bigger ones that I want to take to the processor that week. In the big pen, where we sort them out, I told him to stand on the right side of the pen and keep the cows from circling back around and going out the gate and that I would bring them all around the left and into a smaller area for easier sorting. Well, after a few attempts unsuccessfully, I looked over to my right where Caiden was standing and there were about 20 cows that he had let go by him. I asked him why he had let them go by him and he said "paw paw, I told you we weren't going to load any black cows because they are all mine." Sure nuff they were all black. Guess I'll know better next time.

Vendors Speak | |
The Davidson Farmers' Market has been an excellent venue for the sale of our beef and pork. The market has a great support system both with volunteers, sponsors and customers. We appreciate all the work that the market manager, board of directors, Town of Davidson and volunteers put into promoting this market and promoting buying local.
