Food Day - October 24, 2012

This Week at the Davidson Farmer's Market

Look around. The Davidson Farmer's Market is a 'producer only' Market; meaning the vendors grow, raise and make what they are selling. It doesn't get much better than this. If you want to know more about what you are buying - just ask the vendors. They are the experts of their own goods.

Our farmers have the flexibility to grow a variety of goods. This is challenging and hard work for the farmers, but they know that this is what the Market shoppers want - a variety. Lots of planning, researching, experimenting, planting, replanting, tending, time and care goes into delivering all the selections you see on the tables every Saturday morning.

Already, farmers have started planting their fall crops. Pretty soon your pallets will experience seasonal tastes such as collard greens, kale, beets, radishes, spinach, turnips, cabbage and broccoli. And until the first frost, tomatoes will continue to be around. So you may mix your fall flavors with your late summer tomatoes. That's different and delicious!

Until then, you'll find all the late summer produce you've seen for weeks and the consistent offerings of grass fed beef, poultry, seafood, baked goods, prepared foods, breakfast burritos, empanadas, honey, eggs, cheeses, flowers, herbs, soaps, lavender, doggie treats and more!

Again this week, the Barbee's are selling canning tomatoes. Stop by and buy a box. And if you missed Tommy's "Corn Canoodling" talk last Saturday, he'll be happy to give you the 411.

Peaches will be around for a few more weeks. Get them while you can!

Sweet Potatoes are here too. Check out the full list of Market offerings this week (below) so you may plan your shopping day.

You'll see lots of recipes for inspiration this week, including a sweet potato pie recipe!

To see a complete list of Market offerings, follow this link. You may print it and take it to Market.

And remember, just ask your farmer. They want you to!

See ya tomorrow,

See you at the Market,
