This Week at the Davidson Farmer's Market | |
There's no two ways about it, some of the past couple weekends have been hot ones with temperatures continually getting in the 90's. However, this weekend is calling for slightly cooler temps in the mid 80's and scattered storms.
But while most of us are trying to escape the humidity, heat, and constant looming thunderstorms, our farmers still are working hard in their fields, pastures and kitchens. This is their life and their passion. Coming to the Market to deliver their product to you - the customers, that admire and carefully select their tomatoes, corn, peaches, melons, meats, cheeses, eggs, fish and honey - makes them happy, proud and satisfied; a firm reminder of why they do what they do.
Important Announcements For This Week:
* KC Farm will not be at Market in the morning.
* Barbee Farm will have boxes of canning tomatoes for sale. And for the next few weeks you may pre-order to be sure you get some!
* Twin Oaks will have green beans and blueberries!
* Tommy Barbee will be hosting two Corn Canoodling educational sessions tomorrow, at 9 and 10 a.m., near his booth (on the grassy corner).
Aug. 5-11 is National Farmer's Market Week. Celebrate the Market and our farmers who hold the knowledge of the land - that's been passed down from generation to generation. Learn - grow - eat!
Rain or shine, we'll be at the Davidson Farmer's Market!

Salsa Showdown was Flavory!
By: Dan Redinger, Davidson College 2013 & DFM Summer Intern
| |
Last Saturday the DFM battled Mother Nature to see who could bring the most heat by having the Salsa Showdown again for the third year in a row.
Our four contestants arrived at the Market bright and early to receive their market cash, so they could get the best ingredients the vendors had to offer in a bout of competitive shopping. The Market vendors were extremely helpful in providing their insight in order to let contestants know about what tomatoes, peppers, and other elements would aid them in perfecting their salsa craft.
As the market crowd (as well as the humidity) increased over the course of the morning, the contestants went to their stations and began to bring their recipes into fruition. While most people continued to shop, our busy salsa making contestants were working feverishly, bringing professional cooking techniques, a few family secrets, and even child labor to the table. Once salsa making had ceased, it was apparent that a wide variety of salsa had be concocted, ranging from fruit to the traditional hot and spicy blend.
Finally, the salsas were ready to be tasted and judged by the both refined and unrefined palates of our DFM patrons who took their opinions to the voting box. Organic chips were donated thanks to the local Harris Teeter. The final tally was close, and after confirming the results, two Davidson College students, Claire Naisby and Emma Park, won the bragging rights of being able to say that they have the "Best Salsa in Davidson!"
We congratulate the winners and thank everyone for their involvement! We can't wait for next year's showdown, and look forward to our next batch of contestants and their salsas.

Recipes will be posted in next weeks newsletter. |
