Saturday Salsa
Elle Gurskis, Davidson College 2013
On Saturday nights, my friends and I crowd around a big table at El Paraiso, our favorite restaurant in Cornelius. We go there partly because my friend Katie's parents own the place, but mostly because we love the awesome Central American food. Especially the salsa. Without fail, every time we go, we scarf so many salsa-smothered tortilla chips that we're pretty much stuffed by the time our meals arrive. (But we always manage to make room.)
The salsa that the Cruz family makes at El Paraiso is classic and delicious, with a standard base of fresh red tomato. But the possibilities are endless when it comes to this Latin American condiment. Salsa can be just about anything you want it to be-mango-yellow or tomatillo-green, mind-blowingly spicy or subtly sweet. And you can use it as a sauce for sautéed pork chops, a topping for eggs in huevos rancheros, a filling for fish tacos, and more. With homemade salsa, it's easy to get creative and tough to mess up.
Get ready to taste some delicious salsa recipes at the Davidson Farmer's Market this Saturday. After the Showdown, stock up on the Market's fresh, local ingredients, like jalapeños, onions, garlic, cucumbers-even peaches. Then, head home, mix up your own salsa, and dig in.

Vendors Speak | |
Barbee Farms is a small family farm in Cabarrus County that enjoys and benefits from the Davidson Farmers Market. We were one of the founding farmers of the market and have grown as a vendor and a farm from the experience. Our farm is based mostly on "direct to consumer" sales, and this market greatly helps us achieve this goal. We hire local folks to help us plan, plant, tend, harvest and prepare for market year round. We sell to local folks that love the freshness and quality of local. The Davidson market deserves your support. Without markets like this, local farmers are competing with food shipped from all over the world that supports large mono culture environments. Think local! |

Letterboxing with WOW at the DFM
This Saturday, how about a treasure hunt called Letterboxing? This intriguing hobby started in 1854 when a Mr. James Perrot put his calling card in a bottle and then hid it. He invited people who found his bottle to do the same. The hobby has evolved over the years. Now, it is estimated that there could be up to 40,000 letterboxes just in England, with many thousands more around the world, including the U.S.
The Letterboxing treasure hunt at the Farmer's Market will be a simplified version of this activity designed for children and their parents. The goal will be to collect stamps from all the boxes hidden at the Market. We'll give you the first clue at the WOW table and a sheet on which you can collect the stamps. Each box will have a rubber stamp and ink pad as well as the clue for finding the next box. We hope you will find this a fun way to explore the Market. If you want to know more, go to the DLC website and read this article. |
