Vendors Speak | |
At Gilcrest, we truly cherish the Davidson Farmer's Market. Not only is it vital to our overall business plan, it is a welcoming venue - the volunteers who help us set up in the morning, the customers who inspire us to do what we do, and the staff that keeps it all running smoothly. We recommend the DFM to people who are looking for fresh, healthy food and a unique farmer's market experience.

This Week at the Davidson Farmer's Market
Tomorrow could be a perfect Market day - low 70's and partly cloudy. We'll even accept a little drizzle in exchange for the cooler temps; but no matter what - the Market will be open and ready for business!
Melons continue to be the life of the party. Don't leave the Market without a few - watermelons, cantaloupes, sprite melons and canary melons. These juicy, sweet melons make a delicious and refreshing fruit salad, especially when mixed with Market peaches. It's a 'this week' must!
Visit the Imhoff family for what may be the last of the blueberries! Also, C&O Farms will have their plump and sweet raspberries too. If you want some - you better get 'em quick - they don't last long.
Market tables will be filed with farm fresh produce, eggs, pork, grass-fed beef, pasture-raised chicken, NC fish, cheeses (goat and cow), homemade jams, breads, honey, herbs, Brioche, Pate, doughnuts, tarts, cinnamon rolls, empanadas, pierogis, pasta, tomato pie, apple butter biscuits, Market fresh breakfast wraps, local made soaps, dog treats, fresh cut flowers, lavender and more!
The 3rd Annual Salsa Showdown has been postponed until next Saturday, July 28. There's still time to participate in the salsa battle, so contact the Market Manager today.
Kids Club kids will be making Market fresh salsa too. Come by the Kids Club Booth between 8 and 11 a.m. to shop, dice and mix!
We'll be volunteering, shopping, eating and having fun at the Market. Don't miss it!

See ya at the Market,

Chef Andres Packs a House
A big crowd of Market patrons gathered around Chef Andres Arboleda this past Saturday as he gave cooking instructions, techniques and preferences while searing Flying Fish NC scallops and preparing watermelon and peach relish and radish corn salad. Chef's recipes are right here!
You may find Chef Andres at the Pewter Rose Bistro, 1820 South Blvd., Charlotte. The Pewter Rose is an eclectic casual bistro, offering international-American cuisine. You may also contact Chef Andres directly for private dinner gatherings, classes and more.
Thanks to our Market vendors for contributing to Chef Andres Chef Demos on Saturday:
~ Flying Fish Seafood - jumbo NC scallops
~ Twin Oak Farm - sweet corn
~ Barbee Farm - red onion, peaches, bell pepper
~ Cotton Mill - lemon thyme, parsley
* On demo day, the yellow flags that are affixed to the vendor tents, signify that those vendors donated to the demo!
Chef Andres will be back mid-September! |

Seed Spitting Fun | |
Last Saturday, there was some seed-spitting-fun going on at the Davidson Farmer's Market. 56 people (big and small) came out to spit Market watermelon seeds to celebrate melon month!
Juicy, melon dribbling chins were giggling and just having fun, as some sticky faces were determined to gain the furthest distance.
Taking first place in the vendor division was Lee, Wild Turkey Farms with a 33' distance. David, Correll Farms, took second place with a distance of 32'.
Results for all:
Men
1st Place - Gary the Market-goer - 25'
2nd Place - Ryan the volunteer - 22'
Women
1st Place - Courtney the Market Manager - 28'
2nd Place - Sonia the Market-goer - 26.5'

Letterboxing with WOW at the DFM, July 28
On July 28, how about trying out our treasure hunt at the Farmer's Market? We want to use this as an opportunity to introduce you to the fun hobby called Letterboxing.
This activity developed out of something a man in England did. In 1854 James Perrot put his calling card in a bottle and then hid it. He invited people who found his bottle to do the same. The hobby has evolved over the years.
The Letterboxing treasure hunt at the Farmer's Market will be a simplified version of this activity designed for children and their parents. The goal will be to collect stamps from all the boxes hidden at the Market. We'll give you the first clue at the WOW table and a sheet on which you can collect the stamps. Each box will have a rubber stamp and ink pad as well as the clue for finding the next box. We hope you will find this a fun way to explore the market.
If you want to know more, go to the DLC website and read this article:http://www.davidsonlands.org/wow-letterboxing/
