This Week at the Davidson Farmer's Market

As the summer weeks go by, the local, fresh produce and foods keep getting better and better. And the farmers, bakers and makers keep getting hotter and hotter. And our Market patrons too, for that matter.

Saturday is going to be another hot one, so make plans to come out early to buy your weekly foods.

Damson plums are here two weeks early. Visit the Barbee booth to make sure you get yours!

Sweet onions, tomatoes, eggplant, corn, tomatoes, leeks, beets, green beans, squash, okra, carrots, peppers (sweet and hot), potatoes, blueberries, blackberries, peaches, watermelons and cantaloupes will pour over the tables tomorrow.

Red snapper, shrimp, grass-fed steaks, chicken, hot dogs and sausages may be found at the Market.

Also find eggs, jams, honey, goat cheese, fresh mozzarella, muffins, lemon squares, cinnamon rolls, doughnuts, Brioche, whole wheat bread, banana bread, seasonal tarts, fresh tomato pie, and breakfast to-go!

And don't forget local dog treats, fresh lavender (lotions, soap and bath salts), fresh cut-flowers, herbs, Tussie-Mussies, Shitake powder, plants, essential oils, soaps and more!

You will find just what you need and crave at the Davidson Farmer's Market!

Chef Vera is back this week making Eggplant, Heirloom Tomato and Fresh Mozzarella Stacks.

All ingredients are fresh from the Market. Come by the demo tent at 9 and 10 a.m. to sample this tasty summer treat and learn how to do it yourself!

Wheat Grinding and Early Mornings

Imhoff galsDid you know that the Imhoff family grinds wheat (with a hand-crank grinder)for their whole wheat breads? And this may just be one of the secret ingredients to their homemade doughnuts; made fresh every morning before Market.

When Market shoppers are in their peaceful morning slumbers, several Imhoff family members are up at 2 a.m. making doughnuts for the Davidson Farmer's Market. As the doughnut makers finish and clean, several more family members pack, prepare and head to Market.

Ask them about their wheat grinder and early mornings. And thank them for bringing these very popular, melt-in-your-mouth doughnuts to Market!

Chef Anthony Cooked-up A Breakfast for Champions

Anthony - Beer and Brats

Saturday was a scorcher, but brat and beer-lovers came out for brunch and weren't dissapointed by the delicious samples they devoured.

Here's what our Breakfast of Champions ticket holders sampled:

  • Wild turkey Farms German Brat with Olde Hickory Stick Stout
  • Gilcrest Natural Farm Hot Dog with Second Wind Pale Ale
  • Chef Charles Roman Style Chicken Sausage with Hoppyum IPA
  • Big Oak Farm Kielbasa with White Zombie Pale Ale

Thanks to our friends at Summit Coffee for partnering with us again. And thanks to Chef Charles for providing us with a grill, coals and all the tools we needed!

The Incredible Edible Eggplant

Elle Gurskis, Davidson College 2013

I love everything about eggplant-the luscious purple of its skin, the rich complexity of its flavor. Most of all, I love its versatility. This bulbous berry (who knew it wasn't a vegetable?) is a world traveler, starring in French ratatouille, Italian eggplant Parmesan, and Middle Eastern baba ghanoush. The best I ever had was when I was studying abroad in China, where no family-style meal was complete without mouthwatering braised eggplant in garlic sauce. Is there anything eggplant can't do?

But a thing this gorgeous and multi-talented is bound to be intimidating. Some are afraid to try cooking eggplant at home, since it can sometimes taste bitter or turn soggy. But avoiding bitterness is as easy as choosing ultra-fresh eggplant. (Some also swear by salting in advance or adding a pinch of sugar during cooking.) As for keeping eggplant from turning into an oil-soaked sponge, cook it quickly in a small amount of oil, or use a basting brush to paint a little oil directly on its sliced surfaces.

I adore eggplant grilled, roasted, and sautéed, but flash-fried is my favorite. I slice the eggplant into thin rounds, which I dredge in flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs. I toss it in batches into a pot of hot vegetable oil-just enough so that the eggplant isn't resting on the bottom. When it's nice and golden brown on both sides, I drain the eggplant slices on paper towels and sprinkle them with coarse sea salt. I like to dip the crispy rounds in good marinara sauce.

With eggplant, the possibilities are endless. For more ideas, check out the New York Times or Eating Well (my mom and I are big fans of Eating Well's Skillet Moussaka, which we tried for the first time last week). Get inspired by a new recipe, and then bring home some beautiful summer eggplant from the Davidson Farmer's Market. You'll be glad you did.
