Help the Market - Volunteer!
Thanks to the DFM volunteers that help set-up 30 plus tents and tables every Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m. and those that come out at noon to help break-down the Market and return the tents, tables and supplies back to the Market shed. There are countless tasks to be done each Market day and you make it all happen. We simply couldn't do it without you!
We are searching for more volunteers!
Volunteering at the Market is fun! |

"Earth is here so kind, that just tickle her with a hoe and she laughs with a harvest." --Douglas William Jerrold
I've always loved that quote. Not being a gardener (in fact, quite the contrary), I admire the home gardener who is able to coax flowers, vegetables, fruits, even grass to grow on their plot. I am awestruck by men and women who actually make their living from doing so.
Simply stated, farms feed us and I am so grateful to live in a community that values farmers.
But it's not just the farmers who I am thankful for; the food crafters and cheese makers and bread bakers and honey producers and soap-smiths and plant purveyors and seafood vendors and flower designers and pasta creators and dog treat inventors and sweet-treat suppliers and savory stuffed pastry merchants and gourmet food chefs-they are the super stars of the Davidson Farmer's Market. They are the courageous ones who've chosen hard (satisfying) work over predictable, safe jobs.
It is doubtful that they are tending to, and schlepping their (mostly) culinary wares from around the region to Davidson because of the promise of great wealth. As much as I hate assumptions, it seems safe to assume that these men and women are doing so because, on some level, they love doing it. And we can feel that love in everything they make and sell.
*Really and Truly*
Like Tita in the novel, Like Water for Chocolate -their love and attention seep into what they grow, make, bake, cook and sell- resulting in products that taste, look and feel different. Better.
Don't believe me? Okay, try this out: Spend an hour (or two) at Davidson Farmer's Market, browse, listen to music, people-watch, shop, maybe get a coffee from Summit-take it all in. Then, go to Wal-Mart and do the same; browse, listen to elevator music and price-slashing announcements, people-watch (I dare you), shop, maybe grab a coffee at McDonald's-take it all in. Feel any difference? I'm betting that the anemic, Guatemalan-grown tomato doesn't hold the same appeal as the plump, rosy, ripe one grown in China Grove, NC.
I'm not altogether against Wal-Mart-style, rock bottom prices; they have their place, like at the gas station or carpet warehouse. I like a good deal as much as the next guy or gal, but when it comes to food, I truly believe that we get what we pay for, in every sense (literally and figuratively).
Farms feed us.
I support them.
I shop at Davidson Farmer's Market.
