Wednesday night, at the KC Farm store, located off Midway Rd., on the right, heading on Hwy. 115 south, there was a variety of fresh produce including zucchini, squash, greens, onions, cucumbers, corn (by Barbee), tomatoes (by Twin Oaks), farm fresh eggs and a selection of grass fed beef.
Get your mid-week groceries here. Fast, friendly and reliable.

Finding Tasty Tomatoes
Chef, Momma, Writer ~ Jenny Brulé
Last week, summer officially arrived in Davidson. You may be thinking that my calendar is two weeks off, but friend, it's not the day of the month (or a solstice) that marks summer for me. The reign of summer begins (in my book), when local tomatoes are plucked from their stiff, fragrant, green vines and plunked onto the vendor's tables at Davidson Farmers' Market. This all began last weekend-Hallelujah!
The King of summer vegetables (fruits?) has arrived-Let the feasting begin! Salad Caprése, with just four ingredients (thick, ripe tomato slices, creamy slabs of fresh mozzarella and pungent basil leaves, luxuriously drizzled in a cascade of olive oil), tomato concassé (simply diced, ripe tomatoes with more deep green olive oil-fabulous spooned over thin slices of country ham), homemade salsas of all sorts, BLT sandwiches (hubba-hubba!), pomodoro fresco (with tomatoes this ripe and flavourful, chopped and raw tossed with hot pasta is a summer treat) and of course the queen of Spanish soups, gazpacho!
Don't even get me started on the tomato's health benefits (like cancer-preventing Lycopene, as well as properties that fight heart disease, even high blood pressure).
The new color for summer foodies: Tomato red, smeared all over a white, cotton napkin (and the corners of your smiling mouth).
Read more about my affection for tomatoes (and search for more recipes using tomatoes) right here. |

This Week at the Davidson Farmer's Market!
It's Father's Day Weekend. Bring your dad, your honey or your friend to Market for a fun-filled experience with local food, music, chef demonstrations and more!
All dad's love to eat! DFM vendors will have their tables piled high. You will find green beans, corn, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, tomatillos, leeks, potatoes, herbs, peaches, berries, cheese, bread, sweets, protein, eggs, honey and more! And new this week...blueberries!
Kids Club is back; making local beet dye and veggie stamps. Make a card for dad or create your own local veggie art. The garden is overflowing - some veggies need more time to ripen, but some are ready now. See if you can find ready-to-pick veggies. Finders keepers. But don't forget to pull some weeds while you're searching.
Chef Joe Kindred, Roosters Kitchen, Charlotte, will be at the Market tomorrow with demos at 9 and 10 a.m. Chef Joe will come, shop the Market for local goods and prepare an in-season dish, right on the spot! Chef Joe is the reigning champ of the 2011 DFM Winter Chef Challenge. Don't miss him - he's good stuff!
Our Annual Pea Pod Fundraising Campaign continues. Your donations are needed and will help the Market purchase new tents, equipment, supplies and more! Stop by our Pea Pod Table tomorrow and give what you can. Donations of all amounts are appreciated. Thank you!
Here's a list of what you will find at Market tomorrow.

The Imhoff's are Picking
My sisters and I are quickly baking our cookies this forenoon so our whole family can go to Booneville this afternoon to pick the blueberries. We all enjoy getting out there to pick and eat the yummy, pretty berries! Usually we pick several hours in the afternoon and then towards evening we spread out our picnic supper under the shade tree. After we're done eating we pick a little more before heading home.

Food Day is a celebration of real food and a campaign to help solve food-related problems in our homes, on our farms, in our schools and in our communities.
