Yes! December Gardening

December in North Carolina is the prime time for planting bulbs and perennials for spring blooms.

Davidson is located in Planting Zone 7b with the average minimum temperatures of 5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Bulbs require a minimal cool period for good bloom production in the spring and are best planted when temperatures are below 60 degrees. Make sure to condition the earth with compost before planting and follow the planting guide for the bulbs. Depth of planting, length of cooling, soil coverage and mulching may affect the growth of the plant. Daffodils, hyacinths, tulips, allium, and crocus are common for this zone.

For in-depth advice on planting do's and don'ts, call the Mecklenburg Extension Master Gardener Hotline at 704-336-4011 or go to www.mastergardenersmecklenburg.org.

Information on successful varieties of bulbs for Zone 7b can also be found at the NCSU horticulture website at www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort. This website will provide information on over 700 varieties of trees, shrubs and native plants recommended for North Carolina.
