Doug's Turnip & Apple Pie

This delicious creation comes from Doug Crawford from the Lomax Incubator Farm.

Certainly after a week of no pie, you're ready for more!

Find your favorite simple apple pie recipe. Doug uses the Betty Crocker recipe from the red and white cookbook.

First, do this. Slice turnips crossways (similar to apple slices) and place them in a bowl. Add 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, 1 tbs. honey (agava/corn syrup whatever sweetener you have) and  1 tbs. veg oil. Toss. Place on a cookie sheet and roast for 15 minutes in a hot oven - 450 degrees.

Let the turnips cool for a minute and add to the cut up apples and spices recommended in your cookbook and follow your own recipe. When placing the mixture (apples/turnips) in the pie crust add a teaspoon or more butter to the mix - the turnips will need the moisture if apples are firm.

And Doug's no-fail pie crust (a food processor is key) by Martha!  Right here.

From the Barbee's

Last year at this time we saw temps in the low twenties which destroyed all green things outside. Prepare market-goers, that outside green doesn't last forever, so enjoy while it is here.

We'll have kale, arugula (primo this week), bok choi, swiss chard, collards, spinach, head lettuce and salad mix lettuce. The full list of Market offerings is here.

Also, if there is something different that you would like for next year, talk to Tommy. This is the time of year that we are planning next years' crops. We are not afraid to try new and different things. Let us know what you would like to see.

 Ms. Betty and her boys

This fall the Xtreme Lacrosse Team volunteered for Market set-up and take-down.  They were quite taken with Ms. Betty and spent a lot of time helping her and talking with her before the Market opened (it's still dark!). One of the boys said he found a new grandmother.

In addition, as one Lacrosse mom reported, "the boys jumped in the truck after Market set-up and said 'that was fun!'  So, apparently volunteering at the Market really does feel good!"

Welcome back Ms. Betty!
