From the Flavour Savour
C. Kernick | |
Pre-Thanksgiving is the perfect time to clean out the refrigerator of all those things you never used, and don't need....you'll need all the space you can get for the meal prep.
Make two kinds of stuffing...the one you always make, and one a little more daring. No telling which one will become next year's most anticipated.
Buy a bigger turkey than you need...not only so you'll have plenty of slicing turkey for sandwiches and leftovers, but also so you'll have a big enough carcass to make a couple of good sized freezable batches of turkey soup for mid-winter warming. Freeze the soup in flat plastic freezer bags rather than regular containers. This eliminates the need to label the containers and you can layer them on the shelves with other stuff on top.
Try adding a little potion of herbs and honey to the "rub" for the turkey before it goes into the oven. It helps brown and crisp the skin. Also, try to get some of that potion between the skin and breast for extra flavor. |

This Week at the Davidson Farmer's Market! |
The holidays are here. You may be in denial, but the fact is, it's November 18 and Thanksgiving is next week!
You can easily create a Thanksgiving feast around Market offerings. Embrace the harvest by cooking a fresh, local meal; making the spirit of Thanksgiving even more meaningful.
This season, not only give the gift of love and friendship, but give the gift of local by supporting your community. Look and see what's around you - home town restaurants and services, local crafters and artists...and a bountiful Farmer's Market!
You'll find squash, sweet and white potatoes, onions, beets, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, arugula, lettuce, rosemary, sage, Swiss chard, collards, eggplant, green beans, pie pumpkins, okra, radishes, turnips, zucchini and more!
Some of our farmers and vendors have shared their traditions and recipes with you!
Patsy Houston with Houston Farm, passes along her favorite holiday recipe. Check it out - Butternut Squash Soup!
And the Imhoff Family shares their dad's favorite - Sweet Potato Fluff.
Big Oak Mike says, "plan ahead!' It takes 10-14 days to prepare this deliciousness - A holiday treat!
Phyllis with Essential Soap shares a holiday frozen drink recipe that will make your traveling guests feel extra special.
Remember, farmers are NOT allowed to sell goods until the opening bell at 9 a.m. Selling before the bell creates pre-Market competition not only for the farmers, but consumers too. Please be mindful of this policy.
What says Thanksgiving more than a Farmer's Market?
See you at the Market,
