Before, during or after your Market shopping tomorrow, stop by Town Hall between 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.to have your posture evaluated, blood pressure or PH checked, a muscle balance analysis or a chair massage.
Special demonstrations and workshops will be held throughout the morning. Red Mango smoothies too!

Chef Joe and the Sweet Potato Gnocchis | |

Chef Joe's demo last Sat. was fun! He was very interactive with the crowd and the gnocchi was awesome. Chef invited the crowd to help form the gnocchi too.
He did not provide a recipe but told the crowd they could e-mail him to get it.
Here is an overview:
Gnocchi-roast sweet potatoes, rice or mash. Combine with egg yolk and flour by cutting in with pastry cutter. Shape into gnocchi, cook in boiling water for about five minutes until they float. Remove from boiling water and plunge into an ice bath to stop the cooking. Toss with a little olive oil to prevent sticking.
Chef Joe sautéed the cooked gnocchi in olive oil, butter and torn sage until slightly browned and fragrant. He then added the corn and turnip greens OR arugula, parmesan cheese and a bit of pasta water to thicken the sauce. He seasoned with salt and pepper. So yummy! The sweet potato gnocchi is offered on Rooster's menu.

This Week at the Davidson Farmer's Market! | |
Forecast is looking good for tomorrow - 65 degrees and sunny. A perfect day for our Volunteer/Vendor Appreciation Community Picnic.
We will celebrate the volunteers for working hard to set-up and take-down the Market each Saturday.
We will celebrate the vendors for brining fresh, local and delicious food to our community.
We will celebrate YOU, our Market shoppers, for supporting the Market!
It's not too late to RSVP for the picnic. Simply contact the Market Manager here with the number of guests in your party and be sure to bring a dish or two to share.
Our meat and poultry vendors are donating brats, burgers and chicken for the grill. Mexican sweet potatoes, Bok Choi slaw, BBQ, Italian creme cake, Butternut squash soup, black bean and sweet potato chili are just a few examples of the deliciousness you'll find at our community feast. Don't forget, next Sat., Oct. 29, is Halloween at the Market. Come in costume and you may win a Market basket. Carmel apples and crafts for the kids!
Sat., Nov. 5, is the first Winter Market and the first ever Winter Market Chef Challenge. You won't want to miss this, as five chefs will be battling to create the best dish using their mystery Market items. The challenge will be begin at 9:15 a.m., just after the Market opens. Meet the chefs in next week's newsletter. Chef Vera is back this week. Be sure to check out her demos at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. It's going to be a great Market day. See you there! |

Lavender Paradise | |

Our word "Paradise" comes from the term "Pairidaeza" the Persian name given for an enclosed scented garden. Since some varieties of Lavender are native to Persia, this delightful herb could very well have graced these ancient gardens.
My own more recent love affair with Lavender began in 2004. After seeing the most beautiful and intriguing of gardens - Jardin du Soleil - pictured from California, I thought, "If they can grow Lavender in California, I can grow it in North Carolina."
This began my research, study and reading of Lavender - its history, botany, cultivation and harvesting. Becoming eventually, of course, stymied in information to the point of inertia, my farmer Dad rescued me in a day!
Hearing my confused discussion of the needs and demands of growing lavender, he simply took matters into his own capable farm-skilled hands - ordered and had delivered to the field all the proper nutrients and announced to me, "Rita, your field is ready - go plant your Lavender. I am not totally convinced that I would not still be "in the books" reading/studying/researching.
Even though I have found that Lavender cannot be so easily grown in NC as in CA, I now have a couple of acres with approximately 600 Lavender plants including the cultivars Grappenhall, Grosso, Abrialli, Provence and Hidcote Giant as well as the English species Munstead.
A RAFI (Rural Advancement Fund International) grant in 2011 has been a great assistance to me. The Imhoff family who sell baked goods and produce at DFM help me with planting, harvesting and the crafting of that most Victorian item - the Lavender Wand. Few people could not be seduced by the sight and scent of a Lavender field in full bloom with its fragrance and color. You, too, might surely be enchanted by Lavender's beauty and many healthful and versatile uses.

Dan, Dan the Pigman |

Dan Huntley was born in Charlotte but has lived most of his life in York, SC. He's a restauranteur, food book author (Extreme Barbecue/Chronicle Books, San Francisco), caterer and food truck owner (Outdoor Feasts), bottler of Carolina Pig Pucker BBQ Sauce, a former commercial fisherman in the Florida Keys and Grand Cayman, and former newspaper columnist with the Charlotte Observer for more than 20 years. He's planning to open another restaurant (QUEEN CITY 'QUE: shrine of fine swine) at the new 7th Street Public Market in downtown Charlotte when it opens in late November but also plans to continue coming to the Davidson Farmers Market on Saturdays to sell BBQ.
He has published poetry and short stories in Rolling Stone, The Southern Poetry Review, and the Charleston Post and Courier, and has won several fiction awards. He has been honored four times for the best writing on Southern Foods published in Corn Bread Nation by the Southern Foodways Alliance.
He spent the 2002-03 academic year on a Knight-Wallace Fellowship at the University of Michigan, and visited Argentina, Uruguay, Greece, Istanbul and Italy. He has worked on humanitarian medical missions throughout Central America - Honduras, Mosquito Coast, Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua.
He has long been interested in "contraption cuisine" - people who cook outdoors on homemade cooking rigs - such as roasting oysters in galvanized trashcans and cooking hogs in Cajun microwaves (steel-lined, wooden coffins). He has apprenticed with a French chef (Brigitte Cox) and traveled to the Greek Peloponnesus with restaurateur George Sarris to learn the art of roasting Paschal Lamb. He's a Kansas City Barbecue Society Judge and has won numerous awards for his barbecue. He continues to lecture on Southern Cuisine locally at the Levine Museum of the New South but also at the University of Mississippi on the origins of Carolina Moonshine with Junior Johnson. This summer he cooked BBQ with Larry the Cable Guy on "Only in America" on the History Channel. He has appeared as a co-host on NPR's Talk of the Nation on the State of BBQ. Last fall, he cooked with former NYT food writer Molly O'Neill at New York's Ellis Island and this winter is catering a whole hog picnic in California for the employees of Patagonia outdoor clothing.
