Correll Farm and the Hydroponic Strawberries |
When David Correll said he may be bringing strawberries to Market in mid November, I had to go to his farm and see for myself.
Correll/Red Barn Farm is a century farm, sitting on 400 acres, nestled off a country road in Cleveland. In 1938 it was a Grade A Dairy Farm, but they've been growing tomatoes now for 52 years. Currently the Correll's have 24,000 tomato plants in the ground. Throughout the year, 30 Acres are devoted to produce, while 170 acres harvest grain and 150 acres harvest soybeans.
After the Correll's were awarded the RAFI Grant, they were able to extend their growing season by building a hydroponic green house. The green house holds strawberries, lettuces and arugula. David hopes the plants yield enough produce to bring to Market in November.
In the coming weeks David will know if he's able to come to Market with his hydroponic goodies. Be on the lookout!
This weekend, the Correll family heads to the state fair to show their lambs, goats, ewes and a pig. They are staying busy!

Market Foods Tidbits |
* Audrey, the apple lady, says that McIntosh and Granny Smith apples can last up to six to eight weeks. She says that this is because her apples are freshly picked!
* Barbee will have carrots tomorrow! They will be great braised, in a stew, grated for a carrot cake, or eaten straight-up!
* The Imhoff's will have their apple doughnuts again tomorrow. It's worth coming to Market just for these delectable treats. |
