Cocoon is Trimming em' Up!

CocoonCan't see the board?  Having trouble identifying produce at the Market?  Flicking your head too much? Need a new look?

DFM sponsor, Cocoon Salon, will be at the Market tomorrow offering free bang trims!

Chef Kenya Sneaks in Goodness

KenyaSneaky Chef Kenya showed her audience how to hide a few nutritious ingredients in everyday foods, making kids say "yum," and parents feel better about their kids eating it.

Kenya made:

A veggie grilled cheddar cheese sandwich, sweet potatoes with carrot puree and Ketchup with apple puree, honey and cinnamon. Kenya also revealed her secret weapon - fudge brownies with pureed black beans! No way!  It's worth a try.

Thank you DFM Vendors for helping supply the demo ingredients: Audrey's Produce for honey crisp apples; Calico Farmstead for the cheddar cheese chunks; Houston Farms for the yellow squash; KC Farms for the Kale.

Thank you Chef Kenya!

Singing in the Rain

Billy Jones

Billy Jones did not let the rain stop him from coming out and singing his groovy tunes last Saturday.  He weathered the storm; taking breaks inside Summit when it was raining side-ways, but eventually he would make his way back to the mic.

Market patrons gathered to enjoy Billy - passionate and giving of his time and talent.

Thanks Billy - we love having you at the Market!

You may find Billy and the Birds Nest on Facebook here.  Like him!

The Community School of Davidson,
Eating in the Community

Community School

The Community School of Davidson's Eating in the Community Practicum has been busy this semester.  They've started their first ever compost, weeded their old garden, planted fall crops with help from "T" at the Bradford Store, explored the Davidson Community Garden, visited Restaurant X for a behind the scenes tour, had a visit from DFM's Chef Vera for a local cooking demo, started the planning process for the high school garden,  and more!

The rest of the semester is full of more local fun.  Stay tuned for an update!

This Week at the Davidson Farmer's Market!

We are looking forward to a beautiful Market day tomorrow. Sunny and cool. Agh, sounds nice.

Our loyal vendors and volunteers may still be wringing out their socks from the torrential downpours last weekend.  The uncertainty of Mother Nature is felt by all our farmers and producers. Tommy Barbee, Barbee Farms, says, "please thank the folks that braved the elements last week for their support. Farmers work rain or shine and crops must be harvested when ready, not when weather is perfect."

Currently fun events are being planned for the fall and winter.  And without completely spilling the beans, you can expect the Winter Tailgate Kick-off to be a Market day you won't want to miss! So make a special note to self - come to the Market Saturday, Nov. 5!

Also be sure not to miss the volunteer/vendor appreciation and community picnic on Saturday, Oct. 22, right after the Market.  It's a great time to be close with vendors and fellow Market-goers, while sharing delicious local food! Come celebrate the Market with us!  RSVP below.

Grateful Growers will back to Market tomorrow, along with all the DFM vendors displaying their best (Millstone will be back on Oct. 8).  Produce farmer's continue to have late summer and fall crops. You'll also find meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheeses, baked goods, honey, flowers, dog treats, lavender, soap and more!

Help welcome first time Market musician Charles Ashley Willimon.

See you at the Market,

Save the Date - Annual Community Picnic

Please join your DFM volunteers, vendors and community friends for the Annual DFM Community Picnic on Saturday, Oct. 22, immediately following Market take-down at approximately 12:30 p.m.  This special event honors all the folks that make the Davidson Farmer's Market come to life - and that means you too!

The main course and beverages will be provided.  Please bring a dish to share.  If your last name begins with a-k, bring a side dish.  If your last name begins with l-z, bring a dessert.

Hope to see you there!  RSVP here.

Essential Soap Essentials

soapEssential Soap grew out of Phyllis Rollins' and Linda Alley's passion for natural wholesome skin care products.   Essential Soap Company is committed to all natural, hand made products. We use locally grown herbs to infuse many of our oils, local honey and beeswax. All of our products use pure essential oils and contain no hydrogenated oil or animal fats. We have a general line of bath and hand soaps as well as our specialty soaps, Hair Heaven Shampoo Bar - the perfect solution for your carry on travel needs; Twinkle Toes Pumice Foot Soap - to smooth and soften your feet as it cleans. When you follow with our new shea butter foot cream, Sole Solution, it's like getting a pedicure at home every day. But don't stop with your feet and hair. Our Essential Sea Salt Scrub will leave your skin fresh and silky smooth.   Follow that with one of our after bath oils or one of our fabulous creams and your day will be made. We also have Facial bars, Honey Lips Lip Balm, Essential Cleanse, Dream Cream whipped shea butter, Honey Hand Cream and after bath oils. Stop by our booth and sample any of our products or just smell the wonderful scents of our Essential Soaps.

Composting with the Compost Lady

Compost.  Do you know what it is?  Some call it "black gold".  It's rich, dark brown, earthy, course and crumbly soil-like substance that used to be your old grass clippings, leaves and food scraps.  It doesn't smell bad, but oh-so fresh, like earth in the spring time waking up after a long cold winter.  In short, I think it's a mini miracle.  One that will happen completely on it's own in nature over many many years, but also a miracle that you can be a part of by creating and sustaining a compost bin in your own backyard.

Finished compost can be used in your yard, garden or house plants.  It is a way to save money and recycle, it adds nutrients and natural fertilizer to your soil, it conserves water, reduces soil diseases, and these are just some of the benefits of maintaining your own compost bin.

To learn more about home composting, the Seeds Community Garden at St. Alban's Church in Davidson, is offering a free composting class October 15, and November 5 from 10 a.m.- 12 p.m.  You will receive a hands on experience with setting up a compost bin, literature on how to maintain and use compost and a wire bin to put in your own backyard.

Register her at wipeoutwaste.com.

I hope to see you there!

Cheers~
