Davidson Lands Conservancy's Green Day will kick-off at 9 a.m. on the Village Green with the release of a Red-Shouldered Hawk from the Carolina Raptor Center (9:45 a.m.). Entertainment and fun festivities will continue until 1 p.m.

Landis Gourmet Mushrooms and the Tussie Mussies | |

I have always enjoyed growing things. When I was just a small girl my grandmother would thin her Zinnias seedlings and send them home with me in a damp paper towel. I still have house plants that I had before John and I were married in 1978! Because we were military and moved often, I could not plant as much as I would have liked. But after John retired and we bought a small farm, I was able to turn my dreams into reality. I started with a few flower beds and a vegetable garden, and then became interested in herbs. Since my major was math, of course my first herb bed was an octagon laid out north, east, south and west. And when I outgrew that, naturally we put eight trapezoid shaped beds around the octagon...and then eight more. John no longer has to mow the front lawn.
By that time John had begun growing mushrooms and we were selling them at the markets on the weekends. We were at a market one Saturday and the Charlotte Herb Guild was making lavender wands and Tussie Mussies. Finally something I could do with my extra herbs! I was so excited that I made them for my family and my desk at work, and then I made a couple while we were at the Market and people actually bought them!
So it 'grew' from there. People began wanting to buy some of the herbs that I had cut and brought with me to make the bouquets and then started asking if I could supply plants. It is just so nice to be able to use the money from the herbs and bouquets to buy my mulch and order more seeds and plants, not to mention tacky yard art.
Thanks to everyone at the Davidson Farmer's Market, this year we have been able to plant nine blueberries, two figs, six chestnut, four hazelnuts, two almonds and a pomegranate tree. Not to mention, a lot of herbs. I can't wait to share all of the fruit and nuts with everyone.
I think I have the best hobby/habit that anyone could possible have.
Cris Herron, Landis Gourmet Mushroom
I love the Tussie Mussie bouquets! I consider it a little Saturday morning treat to myself. It sets on the entry table in my foyer, so it is the first thing I see when I come home. ~ Sandy, DFM patron
