Davidson College Local Food Club

audreys applesOn a mission to bring local, sustainable food to Davidson College, the Food Club is passionate in its support of nearby farmers, in eating seasonally, and in cooking communally.  In addition to hosting movies, panels, speakers, and cooking classes, the Food Club oversees the organic vegetable garden behind Vail Commons and the Food Cart, which sells local, sustainable food on campus. Food Club's work with Dining Services has led to transitions in food suppliers and improved choices at both dining locations on campus.

This Week at the Davidson Farmer's Market!

What a wonderful time of year.  Summer crops and fall goodness are overlapping.  You can expect to find tomatoes, peppers, okra, onions, eggplant, cucumbers, a variety of squash, potatoes, corn, arugula, kale, melons and apples.

Meats, poultry, fish, honey, eggs, breads, prepared foods and cheeses are flowing as usual. Add these local, fresh and delicious treasures to your weekly dinner table.  Stop by a vendor you've never visited before and give their foods a try.

Flowers, lavender, soaps and dog treats are a great way to make someone smile or give yourself a lift.  Special tip - Essential Soap's Twinkle Toes makes the roughest of feet smooth and silky.  No kidding!

The DFM booth is always open.  If you have a comment, a question or a suggestion, we want to hear it.

As we enjoy the last three (+) months of the year and we look ahead to 2012, our minds are open - welcoming consumer thoughts and feedback.

Our Annual Market Survey will be sent electronically no later than the first of October.  Be on the lookout.

Thank you Market-goers for shopping the Market.  Our DFM vendors appreciate their patrons and look forward to coming to the Market in Davidson to enjoy kind and joyful people, good sales and community.

See you at the Market,

Green Day in Davidson

People of all ages will enjoy Green Day, a festival by the Davidson Lands Conservancy (DLC) that celebrates sustainability and promotes environmental education and awareness. Held September 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Green Day will feature local entertainment, kid-friendly activities, and over 30 exhibitors on the Davidson Village Green, on Main St. at Concord Road.

The festival will kick-off with the release of a hawk by the Carolina Raptor Center to emphasize the message of environmental stewardship both organizations strive to convey.

"When we release raptors, those birds have come in injured or orphaned, and so we've raised them and it's time for them to go...it's a culmination of all the work we do in the raptor center, and it's very exciting for us," said Michele Miller Houck, Community Relations Director at Carolina Raptor Center.

Performances by Lake Norman Children's Choir, Toxic Spouse, and the Rusty Knox Band are scheduled, and visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs to picnic and enjoy the entertainment. Many of the exhibitors will feature activities for children, ranging from leaf splatter-painting to sand box games to a scavenger hunt on the Green. "Children," notes Pam Dykstra, DLC President, "love nature and want to protect the environment -- so we want to involve them too."

Green Day coincides with Run for Green 5K (run and walk), 10K, and ½ marathon, and all proceeds support Davidson Lands Conservancy's mission to preserve and protect natural areas. The title sponsor for Green Day is Ingersoll Rand Corporation. Other major sponsors include, Flatiron Kitchen and Taphouse, KOLA Construction, River Run Community of Davidson, Rusher Oil Company, and an anonymous donation "in honor of Sterling Martin."

All Green Day/Run for Green participants and visitors are also encouraged to stop by the Davidson Farmer's Market, across the street, for fall produce, fresh foods, and more informational booths - including a Master Gardener, the Blue Bird Society, and Know your Farms, Farm Tour.

For more information, to sign-up for Run for Green, or to volunteer, go to www.davidsonlands.org or contact Davidson Lands Conservancy by email here.

What are the Correll's Doing?

correll hydroSince we haven't been at the Farmer's Markets for a couple weeks, I thought you all might like to see what we have been doing at the farm.  The last couple weeks we have been installing our Vertical Hydroponic System, to grow strawberries, lettuces, and other crops.  This project was funded in part by a grant we received from RAFI (check out their website rafiusa.org).  Today we planted strawberries, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, and arugula.

Give us a call sometime and check it out!

See ya'll soon,
