Apples Rolling In

Audrey's Produce will be back to Market next Saturday, Sept. 10 with a truck-load of apples! Audrey will bring Asian Pears, Jona Golds, Granny Smiths, Romes, Rubys and Red and Yellow Delicious.

Be sure to stop by her tent to say hello and get your farm fresh, NC Mountain apples. Perfect snacks for people big and small!  And a great treat for teachers!

The Help Cake Tasting

Last Saturday ReadDavidson partnered with the Davidson Farmer's Market for a Bake-Off and Tasting.  ReadDavidson, launched in 2007, is a town-wide initiative between the town, library, Main Street Books and some local avid readers to select a book for our community to read and make come to life with fun and educational book-related events.  This year's pick is The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Baking is featured prominently in the book, so the committee thought a Bake-Off and Tasting would be a great way to celebrate this book.

At 10 a.m. people lined up to taste the baked goods and place their votes -- a total of 73 votes were cast! The winner was Davidson resident, Jan Blodgett, with her Sweet Potato Crème Cake.  Other entries were:  James Shaul of Davidson with his Almond Cake, Rosie Chapman of Denver with her Caramel Cake and Lynn Mintzer of Mooresville with her No-Surprise Chocolate Pie.  If you've read the book or seen the movie, The Help, you'll know why it was important that Mintzer included the "no-surprise" in her entry's title.   Blodgett was not present because she had to attend a meeting in Philadelphia.

Blodgett had one cake leftover and spontaneously, it was raffled-off at the Market.  The winner displays her yummy prize!

Special Feature - Summer Scoop

Exploring the Davidson Farmer's Market is an inside look at the Davidson Farmer's Market from a youthful perspective, written by Emma Boraks and Paulina Campbell.

Great job ladies!

And an extra special thanks to Emma!  Emma comes to Market most every Saturday to run the DFM Booth. This is a very important role: exchanging money, tokens, selling merchandise, answering questions and guiding new volunteers.  Emma is our Market glue!

Thank you Emma!

This Week at the Davidson Farmer's Market!

Fall is on the way.  Feel it.  Smell it.  The morning air has a crispness that wasn't there four weeks ago.  Heat and humidity pour on as late morning turns to noon, but the flirtiness of fall is here.

The days of sweatshirts and shorts; fall sports and tailgates; homemade chili and Christmas wish lists, are not that far away; which means new, fun, delicious, farm fresh food is on the way.  Can't wait!

Autumn's bounty will deliver apples and squash of all shapes, sizes, colors and flavors; comforting potatoes that may be prepared creamy, chunky, cheesy or simple; lettuces and arugula.  And, still we're reaping the benefits of summer goodness - tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, onions, sweet corn, zucchini, basil, melons and cucumbers.

Calvin and Cathy with Peaches and Cream will be at Market tomorrow.  But after that, you won't see them again until spring.  Ask P&C how to preserve your peaches so you may enjoy them through the fall.  Won't your family be surprised when they taste your scrumptious peach cobbler during Thanksgiving dinner?

Our DFM farmers are working hard to extend their growing seasons.  Be on the lookout for some unlikely products coming soon.

Labor Day Weekend is a great time to bring your family out and buy your holiday meal.

See you at the Market!

Please join your DFM volunteers, vendors and community friends for the Annual DFM Community Picnic on Saturday, Oct. 22, immediately following Market take-down at approximately 12:30 p.m.  This special event honors all the folks that make the Davidson Farmer's Market come to life - and that means you too!

The main course and beverages will be provided.  Please bring a dish to share.  If your last name begins with a-k, bring a side dish.  If your last name begins with l-z, bring a dessert.

Hope to see you there!  RSVP here.

Chef Vera's Mediterranean TriggerFish Pasta

Vera with TriggerFishChef Vera delighted her audiences last Saturday morning, preparing her Sicilian style Eggplant with TriggerFish Penne.  It was lip-smacking-good!

David with Flying Fish Seafood only wished he had more TriggerFish and other varieties to sell, but Hurricane Irene prohibited him from brining his normal quantities to Market.

Thank you DFM  vendors for donating to the chef demo: Flying Fish Seafood for the TriggerFish; Houston Farms for the Japanese and baby eggplants; KC Farms for more baby eggplants and tomatoes; Coldwater Creek for garlic; and Landis Gourmet Mushrooms for the flat leaf parsley.

If you missed the demo, you may follow recipe here.

Green Day in Davidson

Green Day, Davidson's annual sustainability festival, will be held September 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Village Green. This popular, family-friendly event will feature over 30 "green" exhibitors, local entertainment, and hands-on activities for children.

Green Day coincides with Run for Green, and supports Davidson Lands Conservancy's mission to preserve and protect natural areas.

Top sponsors include Ingersoll Rand, KOLA Construction, Flatiron Kitchen and Taphouse, Rusher Oil Company, and an anonymous donation "in honor
of Sterling Martin."

Make a day of it - Market, then Green Day!

Chef Charles Honors the Davidson Farmer's Market

22 platesChef Charles Farm to Fork dinner last Friday night began with sparkling pink wine, delicate and delicious hors d'oeuvres and Chef Charles grinning from ear-to-ear as he welcomed 22 DFM-goers and good friends.

Chef opened his catering kitchen to feature 12 Davidson Farmer's Market Vendors.  He delivered an unbelievable local, five-course meal, which you may view here.  If and when Chef Charles opens his doors again, you shouldn't miss it.  It was an honor to be there and an unforgettable experience.

Before encouraging his guests from the kitchen to the candle-lit dining area, Chef Charles gave a special toast.  "Driving to the Davidson Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings is like crossing the  pond.  The people, the students, the kids, the dogs, the food, the music, the community...remind me of France.  I love it!"

Born in Chartres, France, Charles Semail's love for cooking started when he was four years old. The youngest child of a family of six, Charles grew up in a house where the smells and tastes of good food always permeated the kitchen. His mother, who always wanted to be sure that her children had refined and healthy food, instilled in Charles the love for cooking.

Charles began his journey as a Chef at the age of 14, when he first entered a professional kitchen. His four-year apprenticeship in Charcuterie, learning the art of making fine French pates, sausages and smoked meats, ignited his passion for cooking. At 18, Charles received his first diploma in the food industry.

Looking forward to furthering his career, Charles moved to Paris where he gained tremendous experience while cooking in many fine restaurants such as Marius and Fouquets.

Charles moved to the United States to pursue new avenues in the restaurant industry.

He opened Acajou, a French cuisine restaurant in Lexington, Kentucky, which proved to be very successful.

Seizing yet another opportunity for professional growth, Charles, his wife Pascale and son Adrien moved to Charlotte in 1994. Charles worked for Eli's Catering and Dean & Deluca. He also presided as Executive Chef for Quail Hollow County Club for three years; gaining significant recognition and accolades as one of the premier chefs Charlotte.

Seeking the entrepreneurial spirit again, Charles has opened his own business utilizing all the experience and talents of his life as a Chef.

Chef Charles' passion is to serve customers of all types with the finest food and best service.

Thanks for being at the Davidson Farmers Market!
