Chef Choplin

Before Chef Wes Choplin creates his demo recipe for Market, he asks, "what's in abundance this week?"  That's the way to do it!  Essentially, tell me what you've got and I'll make something awesome!
chef wes

Last Saturday he was under the tents grilling -up flavory and hearty vegetable sandwiches.  See Chef's recipe here.

Thank you to our DFM vendors for donating the demo ingredients: Millstone for the Crusty European Bread; Calico Farmstead for theMozzarella; Twin Oak Farms for the Mt. Fresh Tomato and German Johnson Tomato; Barbee Farms for the Eggplant, Zucchini, Yellow Squash, Red Onion and Garlic; and Coldwater Creek for the Basil.

Delicious!

This Week at the Davidson Farmer's Market!

Oh baby...can you believe it?  Baby Arugula is back!

Sweet potatoes and arugula are a great combination - pungent and peppery mixed with sweet and earthy. Try this.  Dice a few sweet potatoes and onions and place in an aluminum foil cradle.  Top with several big handfuls of arugula.  Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and honey.  Shake salt and pepper to taste.  Bake in the oven or place on your grill.  When cooling, sprinkle with feta.  Serve with your choice of chicken, meat or fish.  Slice a juicy Market melon to join the plate.  There's your meal.  Simple, local and delicious.

Cucumbers, zucchini, squash, eggplant, tomatoes and peppers will be plentiful.  And melons too!  Enjoy the end of summer bounties while they last.

Chef Vera will be back to Market tomorrow morning at 9 and 10 a.m., cooking Sicilian Style Eggplant & Triggerfish Penne.  Triggerfish courtesy of Flying Fish Seafood!  Go by and see David at Flying Fish so you can make Chef Vera's tasty dish at home.  But first, stop by the demo tents to have a taste and get the recipe.

So many fun things to do with Market food!

See you at the Market,

Eggs!

If you want eggs - come to the Market early!  Typically, eggs sell out within the first 45 minutes of the Market.

These vendors will have eggs this week: Calico Farmstead Cheese, Coldwater Creek Farm, Gilcrest Natural Farm, KC Farm and Wild Turkey Farms.

What is the Elma C. Lomax Incubator Farm

Cabarrus County and NC Cooperative Extension - Cabarrus Center has partnered in the development of the Elma C. Lomax Incubator Farm Park off Atando Road in Concord.  This incubator farm works much like a business incubator.  Individuals interested in starting a business as a farmer can enroll in the program which provides classroom instruction on the business of farming in Cabarrus County as well as hands-on experience on the farm.  Participants in the program develop and manage their own agriculture business while receiving guidance from seasoned farmers.

Read more about the Lomax Incubator Farm here.

Lynn MacDougal-Fleming

From the Incubator Farm

lomax logoI am part of the first class of students out on the Incubator Farm with a half acre all to my own.  The organic certifier just had her yearly visit this past Tuesday, as we are into our second year of organic certification. Brad from Coldwater Creek was an Incubator Farm mentor.  I have a botany degree from UNC-Chapel Hill.  For a long time, I've had a love for plants and been eager to learn how to grow larger quantities of organic produce to sell at markets and to preserve homegrown food off of our own property.  To my knowledge, I don't have any family farm land and if I do, no one has left me any acres in their will - ha, ha.  So when I first heard about the Incubator Program, I just knew I had to be involved.   What a fulfilling experience to grow most of my food - garlic, potatoes, even flowers.  My husband Kevin and I hope to supplement our incomes as we approach retirement age with small scale farming.  We will probably need to cut down a few more trees in order to do so.  We're on the Know Your Farms Tour - come see us.

Green Day in Davidson

Don't forget Green Day 2011, Saturday, Sept. 17.

Start your Green Day morning with the Annual Run for the Green 5k, 10k and half-marathon After the race, Green Day will continue from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  with exhibitors, entertainment and more!

Enjoy a full day in Downtown Davidson.  Visit the Farmer's Market, the Big Green, Main St. and South Main St. shops and restaurants.  Much fun for everyone!

See you there!

Are you a Growing Kid?

If you are a kid and like to plant and grow things...you could be a "Growing Kid" at the DFM.  Come sell your home grown fruits and veggies two times during the Market season.

Stop by the DFM booth for more information or Email info@davidsonfarmersmarket.org

Cake Tasting with ReadDavidson

ReadDavidson is partnering with the Market this week and hosting a Bake-Off and Tasting at 10 a.m.!

ReadDavidson, launched in 2007, is a town-wide initiative between the town, library, Main Street Books and some local avid readers.  Book's are selected for our community to read and make come to life with fun and educational book-related events.

This year's pick is The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Tasty baking features prominently in The Help, so we have asked four people to bake something mentioned in the book (perhaps Minny's caramel cake? Aibileen's strawberry cake?), using as many ingredients as possible from the Market, and bring a finished product for Market visitors to taste and vote tomorrow morning.  Come check out the desserts and pick your favorite!

The Help is at Our Town Cinemas through Sept. 1.
