DFM Volunteers Rock | |

Indeed this is true. During every rainstorm here in Davidson, the Market tents take a beating. Whether it's massive rain pools in the tent tops or dismantled tents from wind and heavy rain, DFM volunteers help repair the damages in time for the next Market.
Thank you volunteers! We need you and appreciate you! United States Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack reported that since 2010, the number of farmers markets has grown 17 percent, from 6,132 markets to 7,175 in 2011. Rapid growth means that many farmers markets are young organizations, powered mostly by volunteers. |
|
Meet the Produce Lady | |
Meet Brenda Sutton, The Produce Lady, of the NC Cooperative Extension (NC State and A&T).
The Produce Lady program teaches farmers and consumers the wonders of locally grown fruits and veggies. The program shares nutritional details, demonstrates how to prepare fresh produce as tasty meals and snacks, and advises how to preserve them to use throughout the year.

This Week at the Davidson Farmer's Market!
Some of our community families already are back to school or enjoying their last few days of summer. Routines, school supplies, clothes, teachers, friends, healthy snacks and lunches fill our busy minds.
Davidson College students and families begin arriving to campus this week. Freshmen and upper classmen travel by plane, car or train, packed with clothes, dorm gear and toiletries; not to mention aspirations and butterflies. Parents hope that their scholars will take good care of themselves - eat well, get enough sleep and exercise.
Fresh, local food is available right here in Davidson, at the Davidson Farmer's Market. Taking good care of yourself is most convenient - an easy walk or bike ride from campus and surrounding neighborhoods.
Our produce vendors are well stocked with seasonal harvests. This time of year they are bringing to Market - zucchini, squash, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, okra, eggplant, peppers, onions, tomatoes, cantaloupes, watermelon and peaches. Soon, fall crops will begin rolling in...apples, beans, greens and nuts.
Students both old and young are able to enjoy the Market and become part of this community - food, freshness, music, farmers, shoppers, children, laughter, sharing, learning, tasting and experiencing - all together strengthening our fabric.
Instead of filling your pantries and dorm rooms with other choices, stop by the Market and fill your bags with nutritious deliciousness like melons, peaches, apples, cucumbers and peppers. If you're a college student - you may need a knife for slicing. Best wishes for a great start to the school year! Chef Wes Choplin is back for his second Market demo. Join Chef under the tents at 9 and 10 a.m. tomorrow morning.
See you at the Market! |

Flying Fish | |
A typical week for Flying Fish Seafood begins with several phone calls to our fishermen - sometimes as early as Sunday - to determine if anyone is fishing, if anyone is catching and what, if anything, is being caught. Monday and Tuesday same thing, I'll speak to the boat captains directly again (if in range). Most of the time our shrimpers are in range and they can tell me how the trawl is going. I often check a few weather buoys on line for water conditions, wind speed and so forth. Not that I can change anything, but if conditions are rough, I know that it will be a tight week for seafood. By Wednesday we have a pretty good idea of who's catching what and where they will be bringing it. I call my contact at whichever fish house or dock seems most productive and have my name put down for what we will most likely be wanting. This is basically a "wish list" because nothing is certain until it is in my cooler. (Sometimes we actually have to go fishing, like last week. It didn't look like there were going to be any bottom fish available so Mac went out and came back with Black Bass, Carolina Snapper and Vermillion Snapper by midnight Wednesday. We sold it all at the Farmers Market last Sat.)
We make the run to the beach on Thursday leaving around 2 a.m. - hit the dock at around 6 a.m. where we pick what we like. A typical bottom boat will bring in 6,000 pounds of bottom fish. We can't use all that, of course, so we pick what we need, all whole fish. We make it back to our cleaning facility about 11:30 a.m. where everything is broken down for market - everything from Yellow Fin Tuna to shrimp (heads off). Sometimes there are good surprises at the dock like finding Hog Snapper we weren't expecting. Sometimes there are disappointments- like finding the Tuna we wanted was not iced properly.
Every week is different and unpredictable in this business, which, I guess is why they call it fishing and not catching...

Chef Choplin's in the House
Chef Wes Choplin is back at the Market tomorrow with demos at 9 and 10 a.m. He'll be grilling and making Market Vegetable sandwich - the kind of mouth-watering heartiness you'll want to sink your teeth into after a 5K, mowing the lawn, a long day at work or a lazy Sunday afternoon.
And be sure to visit Wes at his restaurant in Cornelius, Choplin's. |
