Barbee's 411 on Home Planting

tommy

Tommy Barbee, spring 2011

In about two weeks home gardeners should be planting any crop that they enjoyed in the early spring. Fall plantings have a very narrow window of opportunity between soil temps being too hot for germination and being warm enough to mature before cold weather. Fall can be very tricky. Successful farmers keep very good notes from one year to the next to record what worked and what didn't. We advise home gardeners to do the same. Soil prep needs to be done when moisture levels are compatible for such, not when you have time. This is a very important step in being successful any time of year.

~ Tommy, Barbee Farms

Did you know that the the Barbee's have a road-side stand, open Mon-Fri. 10 a.m. to 7  p.m. and Sat. 3-6 p.m.?   It's worth a mid-week ride to stock-up on your fruits and veggies!  Approximatley 11.5 miles from Davidson.

Are you a Growing Kid?

If you are a kid and like to plant and grow things...you could be a "Growing Kid" at the DFM.  Come sell your home grown fruits and veggies two times during the Market season.

Stop by the DFM booth for more information or Email info@davidsonfarmersmarket.org

This Week at the Davidson Farmer's Market!

Embrace the tomato!   Don't stop buying them and don't stop cooking and eating them.  Once you've tasted a vine-ripened tomato, eating anything else is darn right tasteless.

Try this!  Slice a Market tomato of any kind; lay it gently on a slice of Market fresh bread; then sprinkle with salt and pepper.  If you're feeling sassy, drizzle a little balsamic vinegar, top with a few basil leaves or add a thin spread of  mayo (Yikes! The mayo is not very "Market-like," but very good!).  Now you're ready - 3, 2, 1...devour!

Unfortunately mother nature's gift doesn't last year round.  Come late fall through early spring, you can't slice a summer Market tomato for your sandwiches and fajitas.  And suddenly your dreams turn from sugar plums and sheep to juicy and delicious, dancing  tomatoes.

How do we savor the flavor and fresh experience throughout the off-season so that our marinara sauces, stews and salsas can taste just like the warm days?  A wise farmer gal recently told me that there's a quick and easy way to store your farm fresh tomatoes, without losing the flavor and nutrients.  These are not her sites, nor did she direct me here, but these show step-by-step how to freeze your tomatoes, as she described.  Check it out here or here.

With a high of 89 degrees and a chance of rain in the afternoon, it will be a great Market day.  The vendors are bringing the best of their best.  Stock up for the week!

Best wishes for juicy and delicious tomatoes throughout the year.

See you at the Market,

Eggs!

If you want eggs - come to the Market early!  Typically, eggs sell out within the first 45 minutes of the Market.

These vendors will have eggs this week: Calico Farmstead Cheese, Coldwater Creek Farm, Gilcrest Natural Farm, KC Farm and Wild Turkey Farms.

*WOW: The McConnell Family - pick a rock, paint it and bring it home

Farm Visit with Big Oak

mike and beck

Mike, Big Oak - Farm Visit or Field Trip?

Mike Smith, Big Oak, recollects an old photo of his grandfather standing beside an oak tree behind the farm house on Beaver Road, Kannapolis.  In the photo, Mike's grandfather and the oak tree stood at the same height.  Today, as Mike shows us around his 70 acre farm, this oak tree towers above him, shading the old farm house and much of its surroundings; hence the farm name.

For 150 years Mike's family has been farming this land.  And now Mike, a one-man-one-woman-show (Mike's wife Dawn) continue to farm; managing hundreds of acres of hay fields and cow pastures.

A smart, kind, determined, forward thinking farmer and business man, Mike takes pride in bringing his beef and pork products each week to the Market. Also, his beef may be found in the Commons on the Davidson College Campus and the Conover Market near Hickory.

Mike's focused on maintaining quality and taste year-round.

Thank you Mike and Dawn!
