From the Farm - Mike at Big Oak

Water is most important this time of year not only for the livestock but also for the pastures and hay ground.  There are no calves or pigs being born in the summer.  We are mowing off all the pastures to clean them up and this will also promote new growth.  Hopefully we will have enough rain this fall so we can have enough grass for hay for this winters feeding.   Of course we are sorting and loading our cattle and pigs almost weekly to make a trip to the processor.

This Week at the Davidson Farmer's Market!

Come celebrate summer at the Market and join in the Salsa Showdown festivities!

Four contestants will be battling to make the best salsa in town.  Contestants and their assistants will arrive at 7:30 a.m. ready to shop for their salsa ingredients when the opening bell rings.  Contestants are allowed only three non-Market ingredients (i.e. olive oil, limes, lemons, cilantro, etc.) They will have 30 minutes to buy their produce and head back to their stations to begin preparing their salsas by 8:30 a.m.  Each team will have 1.5 hours to make two quarts of salsa to present to the judges.   Recipes must be original; the presented salsas must have a name and the contestants must taste their salsas before presenting.

The tasting and judging will be held from 10-10:30 a.m. All Market-goers and vendors are welcome to participate in this free event.  The winner will be announced at 11 a.m. and will receive $25 in Market tokens.

So come out and watch our local contestants put their best salsas forward.  Grab a bowl of chips, a voting card and start sampling.  Cool water will be provided for those of you that can't take the heat!

Only 30 minutes to sample - starting at 10 a.m.  Get there early!

A detailed schedule-of-events can be found on the left-hand-side of the newsletter; along with a variety of salsa recipes for your own salsa-making inspiration!

See you at the Market!

Next Saturday, July 30, personal Chef Vera Samuels will be back at the Market making fajitas!  She'll grill spice-rubbed skirt steak from Gilcrest Natural Farm  and sautee onions and peppers donated by our generous produce vendors.

It's a great time of year to make salsa and fajitas!  Everything you need is at the Davidson Farmer's Market!

Davidson College Service Odyssey Helps the Market

Thank you Service Odyssey for helping with Market take-down last Saturday!

  odyssey kids

The Service Odyssey is a week- long trip for incoming Davidson College freshman that uses intensive community service to build relationships among participants, increase social awareness, and challenge individuals to work constructively within a group. The Service Odyssey reflects and enriches Davidson's commitment to develop the spirit of service within each student. Our first session involved volunteering with Our Towns Habitat, Second Harvest Food Bank, Urban Ministry Center, the Mooresville Soup Kitchen, the Community School of Davidson, the Davidson Farmer's Market and Know Your Farms. We also watched a documentary made by three recent Davidson Alums, Sarah Connette ('11), Jon Springfield ('11) and James Johnson ('11), called The Homeless Cycle.

Farm Visit

Chris on KC

Chris Goodrum, KC Farm

This week we went to KC Farm, located just a few miles from Davidson, in Mt. Mourne. A produce stand calls visitors to the farm with offerings fresh from the fields. Neatly lined rows of tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers and eggplants welcome visitors with an array of colors. Not to mention the baseball field out front, with rows of corn at the end of the outfield. We took a tractor ride through the cow pasture, down to the bottom of the farm where cantaloupes, okra and other goodies grow by the creek, which is used to irrigate the farm. Chickens clucked at us as we passed them on the way back up. It was a hot day on the farm, and we covered a lot of ground. We thank Chris for giving us the grand tour and for all the hard work he does to bring his produce to the Market!

We're still gleaning at the Market!

At Market closing, the Society of St. Andrews will come out and gather farmer donations to distribute to our local community in need.  That's right, this farm fresh food will feed our Davidson and surrounding area families.

Thank you DFM farmers and Society of St. Andrews for making this happen!

Are you a Growing Kid?

If you are a kid and like to plant and grow things...you could be a "Growing Kid" at the DFM.  Come sell your home grown fruits and veggies two times during the Market season.
