At Market closing, the Society of St. Andrews will come out and gather farmer donations to distribute to our local community in need.  That's right, this farm fresh food will feed our Davidson and surrounding area families.

Thank you DFM farmers and Society of St. Andrews for making this happen!

This Week at the Davidson Farmer's Market!

This week's hot temps and Market offerings are calling for Gazpacho and Kabobs!  Everything you need to make a delicious summer dish will be waiting for you at Saturday's Market. You'll find plump tomatoes, hearty eggplant, sweet onions, bell peppers, brussel sprouts, squash and melons.  All of these summer veggies and fruits can be used to make a delightful gazpacho (a cold tomato based soup) or a hearty skewer. Not only will the Market offer superb produce, but plenty of protein too.  Big Oak Farm, Flying Fish Seafood, Gilcrest Natural Farm and Wild Turkey Farm are just the places you should visit.  They offer a variety of fresh options including Sirloin, NY Strip, Chicken, Pork, Mahi-Mahi and scallops.  Perfect options to create your own unique kabob combination.  Try it - it will be fun, healthy and yummy!

Check out the recipes on the left-hand column for inspiration for your summer-time dishes.

We will draw for our four Salsa Showdown contestants this Saturday, 11 a.m., at the DFM booth.  If you haven't entered - do so now. See the Salsa Showdown block below.

The DFM Chef Demo will return on July 30, featuring Chef Vera.

Early morning blue skies and late afternoon thunderstorms - let the goods grow!

Chef Vera's Cool Summer Treats

Last Saturday Chef Vera showed her Market audience how to prepare two cool and delicious summer treats using Market-fresh ingredients.

Chef Vera

In case you missed it - here are Chef Vera's recipes:  Watermelon-Tomato Salad and Panzanella (tomato bread salad).

Demo donations were supplied by: Millstone Meadows - European Crusty Sour Dough; Twin Oaks - Big Beef Tomatoes; Herr Fresh Flowers - Basil; Correll Farms - garlic, bell peppers and cucumbers; Elma C. Lomax Incubator Farm - red onion; and KC Farm - cherry tomatoes, watermelon and Swiss Chard.

Chef Vera demonstrated a great substitution. Her Tomato-Watermelon Salad recipe called for Arugula.  Upon arriving and shopping the Market for her demo ingredients, she quickly recognized that Arugula was not available.  On the spot, she adapted her recipe by using Swiss Chard. She chopped the Swiss Chard into smaller pieces, as it's a more course green than the Arugula herb.  And Voila - it was fabulous!

Cooking in season is a great way to experiment and express yourself.

Thanks Vera!  Chef Vera will be back on July 30.

Farm Visits

In keeping with the Davidson Farmer's Market mission, the DFM vendor committee members are visiting our farmers and producers.  It's DFM's policy to visit the vendors once every few years.  This summer, thus far, we've visited Calico Farmstead Cheese, Gilcrest Natural Farm, Gratful Growers, Houston Farm LLC and Peaches & Cream.

Jerry

These folks have opened their barn doors to give us a taste of their lives as farmers and producers.  Above all, we know that the DFM vendors are growing and producing their foods on their land and with their hands.  They are hardworking and passionate about delivering you the best products week-to-week.
