The Imhoff Family - Henry's Wholesome Foods

On the morning of one tailgate market, I had the pleasure of enjoying an Imhoff doughnut for the first time.  I savored it, still warm and glistening with a sugary glaze, in the cool morning sunlight, and I felt certain that I had found perfection in a baked good.

Doughnuts are just one of the many tasty treats sold at the Imhoffs' stand.  Since DFM opened in the spring of 2007, the Imhoffs have been regular vendors; they feature breads, cookies, cinnamon rolls, and-of course-the famous doughnuts.

Henry Imhoff at the fields
Henry Imhoff
Although many DFM customers know the Imhoffs for their delicious bread and tasty cookies, the Imhoffs did not begin their market career as bakers.  When Henry and Rita first married, they spent seven years as dairy farmers in Indiana (Rita also grew up on a dairy farm).  After a non-farming stint in Kentucky, the family moved to Missouri; there, Henry worked for an organic produce farmer. While the Imhoffs are not certified organic vendors, they use many of the techniques Henry learned on the organic farm for their own agriculture. They raise their tomatoes completely chemical-free, instead using fertilizers like chicken litter and fish.  Additionally, all wheat used in their baking is unbleached and unbromated (that is, it does not contain bromic acid).

When they moved from Missouri to North Carolina in 2005, Henry Imhoff began selling tomatoes at the Statesville farmers' market.  In 2007, Rita Imhoff started baking bread to sell alongside the produce.  Once the Davidson Farmer's Market opened later that year, however, the family concentrated their energies on Davidson, though they occasionally still sell at the Thursday night Statesville market if they have an overabundance of product.

This summer, the Imhoffs will reintroduce tomatoes to their sell-list.  When I visited their farm, Rita first took me into the family's greenhouse and showed me several rows of tiny green plants "This doesn't look like much, but there's about two-thousand baby tomato plants here," she told me, gesturing to the greens sprouting from the soil. When they grow to transplant size, the family will move the plants to a plot of land several miles away that their church allows them to tend. Eventually, the tomatoes will make the forty-five minute journey to Davidson to be enjoyed by Davidson Farmer's Market customers.

Imhoff Boys
The Imhoff Farm is a completely family-owned, -operated, and -shared enterprise.  Each member of the family has a specialty, and they divide labor for market products equally among all older members of the family.  Rita bakes breads; Marie (the oldest daughter) makes cinnamon rolls and cookies; Regina and Emily (the next-oldest girls) make other cookies; Henry tends the tomatoes and oversees most of the transportation and sales of goods.  Editor's note:  Marcus grinds the wheat for flour for the loaf breads (flour mill pictured, right).

With such great cooperation, the Imhoffs truly have an understanding of what it means to keep "local" and "family" food on the table!

YOUR EXTRA PRODUCE PURCHASES FEED THE HUNGRY IN OUR AREA

With the help of SOSA (The Society of St. Andrews), the Davidson Farmers Market will collect and distribute fresh produce to food insecure individuals and families in Davidson and surrounding areas, July - Sept.
DFM gave over 6,000 pounds of produce last year
to elderly and low-income families in Davidson.
   Here's how it works:
1.  Buy produce for yourself, and buy a little extra for someone else.
2.  Place it in one of the produce coolers at the market.
3.  Fill out your tax-deductible receipt at the DFM table for the amount you donated.
4.  At market's end, SOSA volunteers pick up the food and take it directly to local churches, Mooresville Christian Ministries and other aid agencies.

Do you have extra produce in your home garden?   Bring it to the market and  we'll make sure it gets distributed with the rest.
