The History Behind the Pierogi

Pierogi
Fried Pierogi

Delicious pierogi date back as early as the 13th century in Poland.  Pierogi are traditionally filled with potato, sauerkraut, cheese, meat, or fruit.  The pierogi originated as a food consumed by peasants, however, this mouth-watering food spread throughout all social classes with time.

It has been said that different types of pierogi were served for different holidays.  TastingPoland.com states:

Pierogi of a completely different shape and filling were served during Christmas Eve or Easter! Also some important events like a wedding were accompanied by a special kind of big pierogi. These wedding-time pierogi were called kurniki and filled traditionally with chicken meat. Knysze were made for a mourning and dished up during a wake. In January - [during] a period of Christmas caroling - some special pierogi known as koladki [were] baked

Pierogi are still an important part of Polish culture today, and the pierogi has even been called Poland's National Dish!
