St. Andrew's Day: November 29th-30th
 | |
St. Andrew |
St. Andrew's Day, also known as the celebration of Andrzejki in Poland is celebrated by many "on the night of the 29th through 30th of November and is connected with the first day of Advent, which begins on the nearest Sunday to" November 30th.
"St. Andrew lived in Galilee (in present-day Israel)." He is currently the patron saint of Scotland, Greece and Russia.
Traditionally, at around midnight on November 29th, "girls would pray to St. Andrew for a husband. They would make a wish and look for a sign that they had been heard." But, today, both young men and women join in the festivities to see their futures.
A common practice during St. Andrew's Day in Poland is reading your fortune through wax. "Hot wax is poured into cold water, often through a key, and the resulting shape is [said] to predict your future." Various shapes resulting from the wax carry different meanings. For instance, a heart or man means love, a star can signify property and a happy life, a flower foreshadows a nice surprise, a ring means engagement, and an owl, fox or blocked house can signify danger in your future.
Another practice, which unmarried young women take part in is where "participants line their shoes up in a straight line one after the other starting at the back of a room (each girl takes off only one shoe). After all the shoes are lined up, the person at the end takes their shoe and puts it at the front of the line, and so on, until someone's shoe reaches the door. It's believed that the owner of the first shoe to cross the threshold will be the first one to get married."
Dreams are very important during this holiday, as well. It is thought that your dreams may predict the future for the next year. Young women also "place pieces of paper (on which they have written the names of boys they fancy) under [their] pillow[s] and first thing in the morning they take one out - which reveals the name of [their] future husband."

Polish Recipe of the Month:
Dill Soup & String Dumplings
By: Peter and Laura Zeranski
Soup:
2 tablespoons butter, divided ¾ cup dill, finely chopped 6 cups of stock, either: beef, veal, chicken or vegetable 3 tablespoons flour ½ cup cold water 1 egg yolk ½ cup sour cream Salt and pepper to taste
- Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet, add ¼ cup dill and sauté gently over low heat for 1 to 2 minutes.Heat stock to boiling and add the dill and butter mixture.
- Dissolve the flour in the cold water and add to the stock. Bring the stock back to a low boil.
- If you are cooking the string dumplings (see below), dribble the dumpling mixture into the boiling stock and cook for one minute. Keep soup at a low boil to avoid disintegrating the dumplings.
- Beat the egg yolk with 1 tablespoon of butter. Gradually add 1 cup of the boiling stock and stir well. Stir in the sour cream until the mixture is smooth. Return this mixture to the soup pot.
- Simmer for a minute or two but do not boil. Turn off the heat, add the remaining dill, stir, cover and let stand for 2-3 minutes.
- Adjust seasonings
Dumplings:
1 large egg 3½ tablespoons flour
1/8 teaspoon salt
Mix egg with flour and salt. Beat with wisk or fork for 2 minutes.
- Dribble batter slowly into boiling stock from a spoon or fork.
