Greetings!

We hope you made it safely through Hurricane Irene.
We have been busy pricing all of the brand-new pottery from Ceramika Vena. Now is the perfect time to come and visit us.
We will only be taking a short break from unloading boxes and pricing new pieces since our shipment of Ceramika Millena is on its way by boat. We will be sure to notify you upon the arrival of our pottery.
In this month's newsletter, we will be:
- Sharing images of our new patterns and pieces by Ceramika Vena.
- Notifying you on various events occurring outside of Historic Savage Mill this month and in the month of October.
- Exploring the history behind Labor Day in the United States.
- Discussing the Polish Library in Washington, D.C.
- Revealing our Patterns of the Month, along with other special sales for September.
- Announcing the rescheduled date for our Polish Pottery Bingo event, since Hurricane Irene kept us from playing on Sunday, August 28th.
- Supplying you with the Savage Mill office phone number to find out information when inclement weather hits Maryland in the future.
- And we will share a Polish recipe of the month by Peter and Laura Zeranski, authors of Polish Classic Recipes.
We hope you enjoy this month's issue. See you soon!
Sincerely,
Jim & Diane Richardson

The History Behind Labor Day
"Labor Day is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country."
The first Labor Day ever celebrated in the United States occurred on "Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union."
"In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as" the celebration of Labor Day. "The Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a 'workingmen's holiday' on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country."
It wasn't until June 28th, 1894 that Congress "passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories."
Overtime the celebration of Labor Day has evolved, but the original meaning behind the holiday still holds true that "the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership - the American worker."

Contacting the Mill Office for Inclement Weather Updates
Savage Mill had a power outage due to Hurricane Irene so our doors were closed on Sunday, August 28. Therefore, we thought it would be a good idea to share the Savage Mill office phone number and extension for news on any future inclement weather conditions.
If Savage Mill were to be closed or open late due to weather conditions, calling the office would be the best place to find
up-to-date information -- 410-792-2820, ext. 4. However, you will not get an answering machine if the power is off.

Polish Recipe of the Month:
Polish Blueberry Cake
By: Peter and Laura Zeranski
½ pound butter (or margarine if you must)
1¼ cups sugar
4 eggs
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons baking powder
Plain breadcrumbs
1½ pints blueberries (3 cups)
¼ cup confectioners' sugar
Beat the butter and sugar very well. Add the eggs alternately with the flour. Beat 5 more minutes. Add vanilla and baking powder.
Fold batter into a 9 x 12 inch pan which has been buttered and sprinkled evenly with breadcrumbs. Sprinkle the top with all the blueberries. Bake in a hot 400 degree F oven for 30 minutes.
Hint: Test for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center of the pan. The cake will be done when the toothpick comes out fairly dry but with a few crumbs attached. A wet toothpick means the batter is not yet done. But if the pick comes out completely clean, the cake may be too dry and over done.
Remove pan from the oven. Cool to room temperature. Sprinkle top with confectioners' sugar through a sieve. Cut into 2-inch squares in the pan before plating. Serve with your favorite after-dinner beverage such as Port or a chilled, sweet dessert wine.
Yields 15-20 portions, depending on size.
