Greetings!
| |
We hope you are
enjoying your summer! |
We hope you are enjoying your summer! We wanted to give a special thanks to everyone who made it out to our Grand Opening Celebration last month on June 4th.
It warms our heart to know there are so many individuals out there who share the same passion for Polish pottery as we do. For those of you who were unable to attend our Grand Opening event, we have some images in our first newsletter article below of the various people at our event.
In this month's newsletter, we will be:
- Sharing images of our Grand Opening event.
- Discussing Poland's Independence Day.
- Revealing the history of the polka, as well as, polka events taking place in Maryland.
- Notifying you on various items on sale.
- Announcing the date of our monthly Bingo event.
- And we will share a Polish recipe of the month by Peter and Laura Zeranski, authors of Polish Classic Recipes.
We hope you enjoy this month's issue, and we hope to see you soon!
Sincerely,
Jim & Diane Richardson

Poland's Independence Day
| Poland's Coat of Arms After 1989 Courtesy of www.polishculture.co.uk |
As we celebrate our very own Independence Day here in the United States on July 4th, Poland's Independence Day is still several months away.
Poland's Independence Day is observed annually on November 11th to celebrate the anniversary of independent statehood declared in 1918 after 123 years of division by Russia, Prussia, and Austria.
"After World War II the Polish People's authorities removed Independence Day from the calendar but not from the hearts of the Polish people. The reclamation of independence continued to be celebrated annually on [November 11th]. In 1989, the 9th term of the Sejm government gave the holiday back to the Polish people" (Clough).
Just as our Independence Day is extremely important to us in the United States, Poland's Independence Day is extremely important to Poland's citizens as well as Polish individuals around the world.

The Polka & Polka Events in Maryland
The polka is a lively dance of Bohemian origin that is known throughout Europe and the Americas.
"The polka was originally a Czech peasant dance, developed in Eastern Bohemia (now part of Czechoslovakia). Bohemian historians believe that the polka was invented by a peasant girl (Anna Slezak, in Labska Tynice in 1834) one Sunday for her amusement. It was composed to a folk song 'Strycek Nimra Koupil Simla (Uncle Nimra brought a white horse).' Anna called the step 'Madera' because of its quickness and liveliness" ("Polka: History of Dance").
The dance was later named "pulka," which "is Czech for 'half-step,' referring to the rapid shift from one foot to the other" ("Polka: History of Dance"). It was not long before "polkamania" came over many as it spread throughout Europe.
For more information on the history of the Polka visit: http://www.centralhome.com/ballroomcountry/polka.htm
The polka is a very important cultural dance to the Polish community, and polka events occur throughout Maryland every month! The Polish Community of Baltimore has a lengthy calendar of events with some located very close to our shop in Historic Savage Mill. To find out the events for the coming months visit: http://www.polishcommunity.com/PolkaEvents4.bak2/index.htm.
Each event has a phone number listed next to it. To find out more information on a particular event, simply call the number listed next to the event.
A location that is frequently listed on the Polish Community of Baltimore's website is Blob's Park where they feature various bands that play polka music along with a variety of other dance music. Admission generally ranges from $8 to $15. Be sure to check out their website: http://www.blobspark.net/.
