About Boleslawiec, Poland
Located in the northwestern part of the Dolnoslaskie Voivodship, Boleslawiec, Poland, is where the Polish pottery we know and love originated back in the 16th century. Boleslawiec is located on the
Bóbr River , and through this river, deposits of stoneware clay accumulate in the river basin. This clay is then used to create the beautiful pieces we import direct from Boleslawiec, Poland. While Boleslawiec, Poland is well-known around the world for the breath-taking pottery it produces, the region is also full of beautiful architecture such as the Town Hall and the 15th century Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. As polandforvisitors.com has also revealed, "Boleslawiec is one of the few places in Poland where you can use US dollars to purchase pottery. This is because this pottery is extremely popular with the US military personnel living in Germany. The shopkeepers too speak more English than Polish." Through the establishment of the artistic, yet functional pottery in Boleslawiec, this city has been dubbed the Miasto Ceramiki or "Ceramics City." A fitting name; don't you think? |
The Polish Pottery Production Process
The process of getting a piece of Polish pottery to you begins with the delivery of loose clay which is mined from the Bóbr River to the factory (in our case the factories are Ceramika Millena and Ceramika Wiza). Courtesy of thetimeslesskitchen.com the next steps that are taken to get your own unique piece of pottery are: - A hand production model is created by the artistic director and form designer.
- A hand production primary form is produced.
- A hand production working form is produced in the shape of a mold.
- Shaping a form with a liquid slip.
- Hand washing and cleaning a semi-finished product
- Hand arrangement on the rack for initial firing
- Hand unloading after first firing
- Hand checking quality of semi-finished product
- Hand painting of product
- Hand glazing of product
- Hand arrangement on the rack for the second firing
- Hand unloading of finished product
- Hand sorting and quality inspection of finished product
- Hand wrapping and packing into cartons for shipping

Our Polish Recipe of the Month:
Polish Kielbasa and Sauerkraut
This item is an absolute staple to our employee, Olivia's holiday dinner table. Whether it be Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter, this dish is always served.
1 lb. kielbasa
15 oz. can of sauerkraut
- In a large saucepan, boil the kielbasa link whole until it is no longer pink inside.
- Remove the kielbasa link and dump the water from the pan. Cut the kielbasa into bite-size pieces.
- In the previously-used saucepan, add the can of sauerkraut. Fill the can with water and add the water to the saucepan.
- Return kielbasa pieces to the saucepan as well.
- Cook until warm. Serve in your favorite piece of Polish stoneware.
There are several variations to this recipe. Some add pepper, sauteed onion, brown sugar, and even diced apples. Be creative! |
