Simple Self Care

CULTIVATE SELF-COMPASSIONself hug

Research suggests that accepting your imperfections contributes to wellbeing.  Individuals who score high on tests of self-compassion are less prone to anxiety or depression, more successful at maintaining their desired weight, more optimistic, and happier. Our cultural bias favors self-discipline or "will power," and many believe their inner critic keeps them in line. But compassion does not equate with low standards or indulgence.  Next time you feel down on yourself, imagine that a child or friend is experiencing a challenge like yours and treat yourself as you would them.  Instead of berating a perceived weakness, treat yourself kindly and consider circumstances you might modify or resources you might tap to facilitate a desired outcome.  For how to cultivate self-compassion, visit www.self-compassion.org.

MASSAGE ALLEVIATES FIBROMYALGIA SYMPTOMSmassage of neck

A 20-week study of 59 patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia (per American College of Rheumatology criteria) compared weekly myofascial release to a placebo sham treatment. The myofascial work focused on 18 painful points most typical of fibro-myalgia. Compared to their own baselines as well as the placebo group, massage recipients showed statistically significant improvements in pain, anxiety, physical function, sleep, and several sensitive points. One month after weekly treatments ended, improvements in these areas were still significant. Even six months post-treatment, improvements in sleep and a sensitive point still lingered. Researchers concluded that fibromyalgia patients benefit from myofascial release.

ANTI-BACTERIAL INSANITY
A U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel concluded that "antibacterial" soaps, deodorants and other consumer products pose unacceptable risks. The American Medical Association states that "It may be prudent to avoid the use of antimicrobial agents in consumer products." A number of environmental and public health organizations have petitioned the FDA and EPA to ban the triclosan and similar chemicals in these products. Research shows that anti-bacterial soaps are no more effective than other soaps for normal use; that they may spur the growth of resistant "super bacteria"; that they may interfere with thyroid and other endocrine system functioning; and that upon reaching aquatic ecosystems these chemicals can kill algae that are foundation of food chains supporting all aquatic life.... Whew! What's a body to do? Use up (rather than discard) any anti-bacterial bodycare products you already have but do not purchase more!
