A Message From Dave

Ever since I put a little bit of my story on the back of the first loaf of Killer Bread we sold at Portland Farmers Market back in August of 2005, people have wanted to hear more. So I wrote a longer version on our website, then recently updated it: (Read my story here). I like to think it has helped others turn their lives around as well.

For me, DKB is not just about making the best bread I can make, although I am pretty proud of that. As we grow, more people have been and will be moved by my story. And because people are always asking me to speak to their groups, we have produced a short film that we hope will be even more effective because it is available to anyone that has access to the internet.

Baking the best bread will always be my number one passion. Trying to help other knuckleheads find their way is a close second. With this video, now I can do both.

Loaves and Fishes

From February 1st through the 7th, we will be supporting Loaves and Fishes by again donating half of all proceeds from the Healthy Bread Store for those seven days. Loaves & Fishes Centers is a nonprofit, secular organization that provides hot, nutritious meals to seniors 60 years and older. Come visit us during that week (or any other week for that matter) at The Healthy Bread Store.

Project POOCH

As a result of your efforts from November 21st to December 1st, we were able to donate $4492 to a killer local charity called "Project POOCH". Project POOCH pairs incarcerated youths with otherwise doomed dogs in an effort to teach the youths responsibility and respect for life while learning to care for animals. The animals are trained and adopted by loving families in a win-win scenario. For more information please visit www.POOCH.org

Earth Friendly Bags

I am proud to announce that starting as soon as March, we will begin using Earth Friendly plastic for our Dave's Killer Bread bags. It's really pretty simple: the last thing the Earth needs is a bunch of our bread bags taking up space in a landfill. We just couldn't have that on our conscience. We already use corn-based "plastic" bags for the Farmers Markets and our Healthy Bread Store. Unfortunately, these corn-based bags are not ready for bread packaging applications.

In an effort towards continuous improvement, we are working with a company to incorporate a new plastic in the production of our bread bags which will make them biodegrade in a 1-2 years, depending on the disposal environment. These bags will still be recyclable with normal plastics. Although there really is no plastic that is truly good for the environment, we have found a way to at least lessen the impact of all those bread bags we produce every day. We are committed to incorporating Earth Friendly business practices with the day-to-day operations of Dave's Killer Bread.
