Greetings!
Wow! What a busy September and now we're moving right through October! I hope you all find some time to enjoy the fall with your families- the leaves are amazing here at Prep this time of year!
The 10th Annual Prep Classic at Madden's golf tournament was another incredible success! Even with this tight economy, we nearly sold out and over this past ten years, this event has raised over $201,000 in financial assistance for students. We are so thankful to Brian '68 and Deborah Thuringer for generously donating Madden's and the sumptuos dinner at the 19th hole these past years. Please join us next year - always the third Tuesday in September!
Today we are preparing to host Gasthaus this weekend! We are excited to partner with the Austrian-born chefs from the Austrian Schnitzel HQ restaurant in Waite Park to continue this Oktober tradition! We are taking reservations through Saturday afternoon, so please come up to Saint John's (at Sexton) and join us either Friday or Saturday night for some delicious Austrian cuisine! Call Mary at 320-363-3317 for reservations today!
Benedictine Peace!

Prep applies to the International Baccalaureate Org |
Recently, Saint John's Prep School has applied to the International Baccalaureate Organization so we can offer an IB diploma to our students. The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.IB is a challenging two-year curriculum, primarily aimed at juniors and seniors. It leads to a qualification that is widely recognized by the world's leading universities. For example, Harvard will start a student with an IB diploma as a sophomore.
Most important to note, we will absolutely retain our Benedictine, Catholic focus and mission, but we will be adding the following elements to create an even better experience for our students:
Extended essay: The extended essay has a prescribed limit of 4,000 words. It offers the opportunity to investigate a topic of individual interest, and acquaints students with the independent research and writing skills expected at university.
Theory of knowledge (TOK): The interdisciplinary TOK course is designed to provide coherence by exploring the nature of knowledge across disciplines, encouraging an appreciation of other cultural perspectives.
Creativity, action, service (CAS): Participation in the school's CAS program encourages students to be involved in artistic pursuits, sports and community service work, thus fostering students' awareness and appreciation of life outside the academic arena. Students must complete at least 50 hours of community service.
Addition of a classical language: either Latin, Greek or Arabic.

Girls resident students moving to Saint John's '10-11 |
The other interesting opportunity or challenge in front of the Prep School is the residency program. At the end of this school year, we will need to find a new home for our resident girls as the College of Saint Benedict needs to end our lease with Richarda Hall. It is part of their Master Plan to use that dorm as office space. Prep administrators are considering the following options:
Move the Prep boys to an open dormitory on the SJU campus and house the girls in the current boys' dorm (Saint Michael Hall).
House both the girls and the boys at Saint Michael Hall with the appropriate security measures in place.
Both of these options present financial opportunities and challenges and are being carefully weighed. The residency program is crucial to the sense of community and the niche of Saint John's Preparatory School, so this issue will be resolved with the continuation of the residency program. However, discussions as to how best to accomplish this are being held as I give you this update, so please send your feedback and questions to Headmaster, Fr. Tim Backous, at tbackous@csbsju.edu and stay tuned for updates! |
