Rock It Learning November 2011 Newsletter

We hope that you are enjoying the fall weather, as random as it gets in Raleigh! It's hard to take in the beauty of the moment when the stores and commercials are rushing us into the next holiday.

Tonya and I enjoyed a couple of days in Greeensboro last week at the North Carolina Science Teachers Association conference. Great ideas, and a rejuvenation of our mission. I have a renewed admiration for the classroom teachers and their dedication to our kids.

Please come join us for our 5th Annual Holiday Open House on December 10 (see below for more info). We love to reconnect with our RIL family and give the campers a chance to show off the camp to their families.

We're having a fiesta to celebrate our 5th Annual Holiday Open House on Saturday, December 10 from 12 until 3. We know you're busy, but stop in for a snack, visit, and a science experiment or two!

RIL SUPPORTS ODYSSEY OF THE MIND

Several Odyssey of the Mind teams from Brassfield Elementary School have made the connection that RIL activities relate to some of the challenges within the OM program. We have already met with two teams and another is scheduled to come next week. Thanks to those teams seeking us out and we hope that we've shared some valuable information to help these children go further in their competition. Odyssey of the Mind

SCHOOL CARNIVALS AND SPRING FLINGS

The school PTAs should be gearing up to ask for help with carnivals and spring flings. Please pass our information on to the chairperson and let them know we'd love to help out.

TRIANGLE GLIDES SEGWAY TOUR

Tonya and I admit to being Groupon junkies, and one of our best finds was a Segway tour of downtown Raleigh with Triangle Glides. We spent a beautiful Sunday morning with our families touring Fayetteville Street, the government complex, and Historic Oakwood (including the cemetary). I've lived in Raleigh for thirty years and this is by far the best way to see it.

After a fifteen minute training session in the store (three of us riding Segways in a space smaller than my kitchen), we were down the ramp and off. I was very nervous, but the learning curve on those things is tremendous. No hand controls or foot pedals - you just lean forward or sit back. On and off the sidewalks, around the lightpoles, through the graveyard, all the while having a guided tour through the headset.

NC SCIENCE FESTIVAL 2012

It's still a ways off, but April 13-29, 2012 will be the second NC Science Festival, a multi-day, multi-location celebration showcasing science and technology. They'll have hands-on activities, science talks, lab tours, nature experiences, and tons of other events. Check out their website at NC Science Festival

RIL HOURS OF OPERATION

Please note that since our move, our hours of operation are 9am - 4pm. We also leave the office for recess from 1-2pm (generally). Anyone needing before or aftercare should contact Right Time Kids. Make arrangements with them, let us know, and we'll be glad to retrieve your child at 9am and deliver them at 4pm. Click HERE for RTK's information.
