Dog-isms:

Side Dal

"Pals"

Author: Seaneen Holmes
His amber eyes are watching
Everywhere you go.
He lets you pull is ears
And pet his giant nose.

He thinks you are his pup
And protects you as his own.
You'll never come to harm
Wherever you may roam.

He licks your baby cheeks
And will patiently await
For you to stroke his fur
Or share with him your plate.

Conspirators in crime,
He will always have your back
And never will he leave you,
You're a member of his pack.

Hello Dal Lover!

We have our marching orders again, dogs in the Florida panhandle needing rescue, so off we go! There always seems to be something in the works needing our attentions. It can be difficult to juggle rescue needs with our home needs, but that is where our awesome volunteers really shine. We love being able to help the dogs, but any assistance that can be provided will give us the opportunity to handle other issues (like a house full of dog hair up the wazoo) or just give us a bit of a respite from weekends filled by events. Next event is the 2 day Bay Area Renaissance Festival's Pet Fest where having a foster dog or just getting a booth break would be wonderful. Our DRTB volunteers ROCK, so why not join them?

"In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi human.  The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog."  ~Edward Hoagland

Springtime is here and it's filled with lots of opportunities for DRTB! There are so many events for us to showcase the dogs we have for adoption, get the word out about rescues, and the need for more homes. However, we have another need... WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO STAFF THESE EVENTS! The events are a lot of fun... better yet you get to talk about the thing you love most... your spotted furries!  It's also a great opportunity to meet lots of other dog lovers all the while doing a good deed for the homeless Dals. Please think about sparing one day a month to sign up for one of our events. Our events are posted to the website calendar as soon as we get notice, usually a month in advance or more. We'd love to see some new faces helping out. Please email daldogevents@msn.com if you can join us.

Springing Ahead

Time & dogs wait for no man

Misty Rose is home
Misty Rose is HOME!
The groundhog was wrong! Spring is already here and so is the predictable influx of needy dogs. There was good news this month as Anna Banana, Widget, Pepper, Chloe, Misty Rose, and Houston all found their forever homes! We also got word that while waiting for medical care, Ghost found his forever home with one of his caretakers so he won't be coming to DRTB! Malley & Rosa are two of the new additions that joined rescue this month and we hope they also find homes soon.

Ocala's Bailey & DinoThen there are Dino & Bailey, senior Dals in Ocala that must be re-homed soon. Their owner fell ill and his family desperately needs to get them placed. With 13 other dogs of their own & health issues they can't afford to take them on for long.

So in 2012, with 16 dogs carrying over from 2011 plus 2 dogs returned, we managed 12 adoptions, leaving us with the responsibility of caring for 26 Dals & dogs. ANY or ALL could use SPONSORS! Your help is still very much needed. Dals & dogs still seeking forever homes are:

  • PollyAnna: a smallish Dal/JRT/Rat-terrier-mixed gal from Americus, GA.
  • Canaan: an 11.5-year-old Dal-mix gal with lots of life & spunk left in her.
  • Betty: a senior from Miami-Dade is in need of a CFL home.
  • Buddy: a 5-year-old Dal/Lab-mix who is a mellow fellow.
  • Jethro: a Dal-mix just arrived from Chipley, FL.
  • Dottie/Noelle: A senior high HW+ Dal-gal from Hillsborough's shelter.
  • Sam(too): a 2-year old "Lab-matian" from Pasco's animal control.
  • Malley: another "Lab-matian", 5-months-old, from Pasco's animal control.
  • Rosa: a recent pull from Santa Rosa County who is ~4-5 years of age.

Rosa awaits transport to Tampa

Additionally, there is a courtesy post for:

  • Patch: a young Pointer-mix.

We list all our adoptable dogs on www.Petfinder.com. PLEASE let us know if you can help these dogs with a loving home or getting them to events so that they might get adopted!

Remnants of a Broken Home

Animals, more often than children, are the victims of broken homes

Dottie 2Dottie the Dalmatian definitely was a victim. We were contacted by a realtor who had found Dottie left locked in a bathroom at a home where the owners were divorced and the house was being sold. Apparently, neither husband nor wife could manage to take just one older Dalmatian with them. Shame on them! Luckily, the realtor had a soft spot in her heart for Dottie and wanted to make sure she was safe. She fostered her until a new permanent home could be found. New owner Christyn says:

Dottie belly rubs"just wanted you to see her latest photo. She was laying on her back, legs sprawled just waiting for a tummy rub. She's doing well on Rimadyl and is jumping up and down from my bed and couch. we love having her around. She talks a lot through her grunts and we laugh. She's a gem and we're so glad to have her. Thanks again."

Dottie homeDottie won't be spending any more of her time locked in a bathroom and left behind. She is pure love for her new family and it goes both ways this time. Thanks to Sherry and Pat for the efforts put into helping Dottie to safety.
