The Gift of a Pet
~unknown

A pets love is one of God's greatest gifts
Always there for you
Their love never lifts.
A pet is a friend to treasure and love,
A gift from the heavens,
A gift from above.
When you look into your pet's trusting eyes,
Something is there
 That no one can disguise.
It's a look of complete love and something to admire,
It makes your heart melt
And sets your soul afire.
When the day comes for you and him to part,
Your pet's soul is still with you,
He is still in your heart.
And at the Bridge he does what he used to,
Running, playing, jumping
And waiting for you.

And when you do enter heaven forever,
You find your still loving pet
And cross the Rainbow Bridge together.

Lee,

We know that Sami, Taser, Holly, Sleepy, Fireball, Bear, and all the other DRTB dogs that have passed guided you across...

Hello Dal Lover!

Here's wishing a very happy holiday to everyone. Ours just got a whole lot brighter thanks to a just-in grant from our own Christmas Angel JOYCE D.!

Times are always hard in rescue, but this month has been particularly painful with the passing of our own Lee Sears. We have recently taken in many dogs that need a lot of extra medical care. So as we celebrate the season to be joyous, we are forever grateful to all of you for your ongoing compassion and kindness for the spotted ones.

Be safe and enjoy,
Susan

All We Want for Christmas is a Home

Senior Dogs NEED Fosters, help us get them out of kennels

Anytime of the year it is sad to be without a home for a senior dog, but it's especially hard to see them be without a human at Christmas time.

We've put out pleas for BETTY and CHLOE but they are both still without homes.  So we're hoping that someone's heart will be especially soft during this time of year.

Betty BoopBETTY is an older Dalmatian that was used and abused over and over again for breeding down in Miami. So much so that she hobbles on her front legs, but that doesn't stop her tail from wagging and her from enjoying the freedom she now has from being used as a puppy-making machine. We'd be lying if we said we were looking for a foster for BETTY... she truly needs a care-for-life home with room to wander at will.

ChloeCHLOE was supposed to be around 6 years of age when we were asked to save her from a South Carolina animal control.  When she got to Tampa and we got a good look at her, it was easy to see she is a senior girl - probably closer to 9 years of age. However, she is SO sweet and really just wants to hang out in someone's company... she'd be a great companion.

Won't you PLEASE consider taking one of these spotted girls into your home? We promise they will repay you with love and tail wags forever. Please email [email protected] if you can help them.
Let's Make it Merry for Our Dogs!

They are a gift to us all

Charles & Mom
Charles with his new mom Kathleen... so happy!

We all love to receive a heartfelt gift and dogs are no less grateful when one comes their way. There are seven dogs that will enjoy the holidays in new homes with loving families. Those lucky dogs are:

Winston: adopted by Deborah C. from Niceville, FL
Sam (too): found his home in Oldsmar with Anne Bowlin
Champ: joins the Keane family (Terry, Fran, Aidan, & Lacey plus a Great Pyrenees)

Ollie: who is super-foster Karen H's new liver-spotted boy.

Aspen: baby was adopted by Melissa & Bobby who found her at the Expo.

Vail: was adopted by the Kent family (Susan, Mark, Shawna & Brandon).

Charles: got his new momma in Kathleen B... they look so happy!

Of course, we had ten more that joined us with two of those being care-for-life dogs; Paddy & Shasta plus Harley/Tango's health has declined to also make him a care-for-lifer.

Xmas Titan
Titan looking for his holiday spirit

We have exceeded our 2011 totals with 85 more Dals/dogs that we rescued/helped beyond the initial 12 dogs we had from 2010. We topped last year's adoptions with 67 adoptions to date and have added 8 as care-for-life. We still have the responsibility of caring for 32 Dals & dogs of which ANY or ALL could use SPONSORS! Your help is very much needed for us to continue to give these dogs the care they so deserve.

The Dals & dogs still seeking forever homes are:

  • Phoebe: a cute 2-year-old Pointer/JRT-mix girl from AL.
  • Kimber: is back looking for a home with a taller fence... she is still a sweetie pie.
  • PollyAnna: a smallish Dal-mixed gal from Americus, GA.
  • Canaan: an 11.5-year-old Dal-mix gal with lots of life & spunk left in her.
  • Misty Rose: our Citrus County abuse case Dal, now recovered, is ready for a home.
  • Betty: a senior from Miami-Dade is in need of a CFL home.
  • Ghost: a 3-year-old Miami Dal-mix missing an eye & due to have his damaged leg amputated.
  • Anna Banana: a 9-month-old girl who needs surgery to repair her damaged knee.
  • Chloe: a SC senior in search of a comfy bed by your feet.
  • Titan: a nearly 6-month-old cutie patootie would love to steal your heart.
  • Sam III: a 2-years-old Dal-mix undergoing HW treatment has a home on his horizon... we hope.
  • Finster: a 4-year-old Lab/Rotty who needs a special owner with lots of experience.
  • Maggie Mae: a six-year-old Beagle/Boxer-mix who loves people, but other dogs not so much.

Sam III shows he's a lover

Additionally, there is a courtesy post for:

Bentley: a young Lab-mix

We list all our adoptable dogs on www.Petfinder.com. PLEASE let us know if you can help these dogs with a loving home or getting them to events so that they might get adopted!

GoDspeed Lee Sears: 1951-2011

The man who'd do anything to save a dog leaves 5 behind

Lee Sears with Peyton
Lee at Dal-loween with Peyton
It is what all dog-owners fear, that we are suddenly called and there is no one to care for our dogs. Lee was a man who time & time again stepped in to save a dog in such dire straits and now his dogs were homeless. Lee made us promise his dogs would stay safe so we now must struggle to honor his last wish. How could we not??? He did so much for us. From shelter runs, transport, bringing a dog through treatment, to fostering; Lee was there for us. He said the best time of his life was helping move the 17 sanctuary dogs to Orcas Island.

Recent years were hard on Lee. A former EMS worker, Lee turned to real estate. Then the real estate market in Florida crashed and he had a bout with cancer, but he was always tried to stay happy & optimistic that things would turn his way. No matter what his struggles he always wanted to do more for the dogs of DRTB.

Lee's passing left 5 dogs behind... some that will be hard for us to place. The dogs are SHASTA a very senior Dal who will stay with Sherry M. until her time comes to join Lee. In boarding at Paw Prince we have MAGGIE MAE a 6-year-od Beagle/Boxer who loves people more than other dogs and FINSTER an under-socialized 4-year-old Lab/Rottweiler. Already placed are SUGAR a Chihuahua with seizures and LEONA a 3-year-old Rottweiler who are in the care of family members. If you can do anything to help we'd appreciate it... it will be costly to keep them safe.

His heart-dog Sami
Our last happy memory of Lee was gathered around a table post Dal-loween and enjoying his company... it is a moment we hold dear. DoGspeed Lee... we hope your beloved Sami & Mom were the first to greet you across the Rainbow Bridge along with the rest of our dogs that have gone on ahead.
