THE DALLY NEWS
September 2011

Kudos & Shout-outs:
We are so proud to announce that one of our very own rescues, Smokey Richter, was recently chosen for the 2012 Dog Fancy calendar.  Adopted by Terrie and Bruce... he was saved from HCAS in Tampa.  Isn't he just the handsomest boy?  Smokey, a Dal smiler, now has something to really smile about! Dog-isms:

Side Dal
"He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds; my other ears that hear above the winds. He has told me a thousand times over that I am his reason for being. When I'm wrong, he is delighted to forgive. When I'm happy, he is joy unbounded. With him, I know a secret comfort and a private peace. His presence is protection against my fears of dark and unknown things. He has promised to wait for me, whenever, wherever, in case I need him. I expect I will, as I always have. He is my dog."

Hello Dal Lover!

It has been quite a month for disasters... earthquakes, hurricanes... who  knew? While we can't always avoid what Mother Nature throws us, we can try to be prepared to deal with the aftermath. Please make a plan for yourself and your pets which include steps for recovery and an out of area contact. Those in a disaster zone are usually cut off from communications so having a trusted contact out of area makes it possible to reunite loved ones more quickly. So everyone keep safe and prepare... "Mother" seems to be crankier than usual.

Fundraiser Keeps Us Saving Dogs

Dalloween 2011 flyer

It's almost time for the Dal-loween Festi-Dal! Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 15th to join us for our annual fundraising celebration of spots. As in years past, we will hold it at Lake Park, 17302 N. Dale Mabry Highway in Lutz (Thank-you Kathey W. for sponsoring the shelter) which has a $2/car park admission.

We are working hard to make this an exciting, fun day for all. We plan to have a "Kissing Spot" booth and exhibition of trained animals from Gary Gero's Bird's & Animals Unlimited who are premier animal trainers for the movie industry. Again we will have Brenda Knoll coming to do photos of your pets with a portion of each portrait going to DRTB! You can view some of her work at www.Pbase.com/bknoll. These make great gifts and holiday giving is upon us. We are looking to add more fun while keeping the best of last year's contests & games. Put on your thinking caps to create the best costume for your pooches! Again, the top three winners will be awarded with a trophy and really neat prizes. We will have a 50/50 drawing... who doesn't need some extra spending cash? Plus there will still be our usual drawings, silent auction, food with yummy treats, and more!

Here are some easy ways you can help the spots:

  1. Advertise our picnic by placing Dal-loween flyers around town so we can get as many pooches there as possible.
  2. Ask any business/restaurant you support to donate an item for our auction. If you like it others probably will too... don't be shy

For a flyer or donation letter please email us at daldoglady@netzero.net.

So please come on out to join us. Invite your friends. Strut your spots (and non-spots), meet new and old friends, have lots of fun and help us raise money to keep on saving even more spotted lives!

The Power of Ten

August Was Another Busy Month!!

Betty crated

Tired ol' gal BETTY, anemia does that to you.

We had another busy month here at DRTB. Ten dogs came into rescue; luckily nine have been adopted out. However, one that came in to rescue is desperately in need of a home. BETTY is a hard luck senior gal, currently un-spayed, who we believe may have been a breeder dog; she has the most beautiful eyes. Last vet report guessed her to be younger at, about ten years, and definitely overbred. She is very anemic, something we will start treating. Her crankiness seems to be from arthritis. We really need an experienced home that has few dogs and no kids to take her under their wing. Currently she is with our Miami-Dade liaison, but she is also sheltering Bill E who cannot be neutered for medical reasons. It's a hardship having to manage two unaltered dogs, not only for Linda, but also for the dogs since one must always be crated away from the other. Please contact us ASAP if you can help BETTY.

Dogs that found new homes are:

Cole: a striking 5-year-old Dal/Pointer-mix.

Sam: our 4th of July Dal-mix from Pasco is now in his new home on Orcas Island with a newly repaired ACL tendon.

Ricki: a 3-month-old Dal-mix youngster from Citrus County.

Bo: a Dal-mix save from Polk County was adopted by Bart G.

Joey: a 3-month-old Dal-mix youngster from Miami who joins multiple DRTB adopter Jim W. in Georgia.

Blue & Freckles: a father & son Dal pair that had been seized as abuse cases in Levy County were adopted together and now reside in the Jax area. They love people watching on the veranda.

Dharma: an Orange County Dal-mix found her new home quickly.

Dolly: a 3-month-old Dal-mix baby from Bainbridge who now goes by the name Indie.

Teddy

ULLEE & TEDDY our Pasco brothers.

So for 2011 our totals are 65 more Dals/dogs rescued/helped beyond the initial 12 dogs we had from 2010. We have 46 adoptions so far this year and added 5 as care-for-life. We still have the responsibility of caring for 36 Dals & dogs of which ANY or ALL could use SPONSORS! Your help is very much needed for us to continue to give these dogs the care they so deserve.

The Dals & dogs still seeking forever homes are:

  • Phoebe: a 2-year-old, HW+ Pointer/JRT-mix girl from AL.
  • Tango: a 8-year-old Dal/Cattledog-mix boy with hip dysplasia who was returned to us, but now that he is back on his meds he is ready to be your boon companion.
  • Buzz: a Dal-mix boy from GA who arrived with the help of pilots Elliot & Ray.
  • Champ: a Dal-mix boy just arrived from Broward County.
  • PollyAnna: a smallish Dal-mixed gal from Americus, GA.
  • Julius: an emaciated, wounded, ~7-year-old Dal from Putnam is in treatment and regaining strength.
  • Canaan: an 11.5-year-old Dal-mix gal with lots of life & spunk left in her.
  • Sam (too): also from Pasco's shelter, he's a a 2-year-old "LabraDal" ready for his new home.
  • Misty Rose: our Citrus County abuse case Dal, now in recovery.
  • Ullee: named for Ulysses S. Grant, a 10-month-old male Dal-mix from Pasco County that was found stray with his brother Teddy.
  • Teddy: named for Theodore Roosevelt a 10-month-old male Dal-mix from Pasco County that was found stray with his brother Ullee.
  • Charlie: is poised to be September's first adoption.
  • Pixie: a tiny purebred Dal-gal who is only a petite 25 pounds, also of Lake City.
  • Luka: a female Dal-mix from Jacksonville
  • Betty: a senior from Miami Dade in need of a home.

Locally, we got calls for two found stray Dal males. One has been retuned to his owner & the other will become available for adoption if the owner does not respond to our ads.

Additionally, there is a courtesy post for:

Maggie Mae:  a 6-year-old Beagle/Boxer-mix

We list all our adoptable dogs on www.Petfinder.com. PLEASE let us know if you can help these dogs with a loving home or getting them to events so that they might get adopted!

Update on Misty Rose

Dal Cruelty Case

Misty Rose rescued

Misty Rose thanks you too!

We would like to thank everyone again so much for donating to help Misty Rose, the Dal found chained to a metal shed in an abandoned backyard in Citrus County a couple of weeks ago. It is going to be a long time before she is well enough to find a home... at least 3-4 months.

We wanted to give her a week in her foster home to feel safe before taking her to our vet for a check up. We took her to our vet recently and wanted to give you a report on his findings.

She had very bad infections in both ears, but thanks to her foster Mom's good care, those have been cleared up. Our vet said it looked like she had puppies within the last 21 days. Where those puppies are and if they are even alive is a big question. We will be reporting that to the ACO in charge of the cruelty case to search the backyard should they ever find the horrid human who did this to her. We had an x-ray taken of her heart to determine the extent of heart damage since she is a very high heartworm positive and is riddled with heartworms. She does have a good heartbeat so should be able to withstand treatment. However, she also had a really bad case of kennel cough for which she was treated. We want her to be completely over that before we start the heartworm treatment.

It is so very sad to think about what this poor dog has had to endure. Not to mention the puppies she had to lose somewhere. The only positive thing is that there are people like you to care enough about her case to help us pay for her vet bills.  And that Judy, one of our best foster Moms, is willing to give up her time, home & love to help make Misty Rose all better.

Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts.
