A Tribute to Our Guardian Angels
Normally in our newsletters we mourn the loss of our spotted canine friends. This April we mourn two of our DRTB family who are now guardian angels watching over all our spots, both here and over the Rainbow Bridge. Lauren Emery of Maine has been a dear friend and supporter of DRTB. Over the years she has willingly donated to our rescue efforts while cheering our successes and crying for our losses. Lauren had a wonderful love affair with Dalmatians, sending beautifully creative Christmas cards of her and her canine friends (first Chili & Ivan, then KitKat and Remy). She always gave generously from her heart to help us save the animals she loved so dearly. Lauren developed cancer, initially thought to be beaten, but a note sent this March announced it had returned with a vengeance... treatment was no longer an option. Her husband, Dan along with Kit Kat & Remy, were taking good care of her. She knew that Chili would be the first one to spot her at the other side of the Rainbow Bridge. She said she had been glad to know us from afar and signed off with "Eternal Love, Lauren".
Susan was able to have a last conversation with her and treasures a beautiful crystal heart that Lauren sent when Tramp, one of the reasons DRTB was founded, crossed the Rainbow Bridge. We will so miss you Lauren, but we know now that you will be taking care of all the spotted babies who pass through our hands over the Rainbow Bridge. Thank you for being who you were while here on earth. We were also saddened to learn of the recent death of Carl Kutler, III. Carl was one of our very first official adopters and became a good friend. Carl impressed the need to "go big" and start an official 501(c)3. He even helped name DRTB! Thanks to Carl we made a lot of wonderful lifetime friends like Amy and Lee who are still faithful followers. Issac, the Dal Carl adopted years ago, recently crossed the Bridge. We know that Carl and Issac have found each other once again, we miss you both. We want to mention a special annual donation made by Catherine Honig in Loving Memory of her Father Seymour, his favorite pal was his spotted boy. Every year Catherine remembers her father by donating to help the dogs he loved so much. We are forever grateful for all of you!

Where Does It Hurt?
The High Costs to Save a Dog.
 |
Ouch! Looks like it hurt :(

Sometimes life likes to toss you a curve and you struggle to handle it. Last month we had 2 such "curves". SUNSHINE did have Distemper and cost rescue over $1600. The ZIPPY, now named Keebler, was discovered to have 2 pre-existing, torn ACL tendons that cost rescue $3000 to repair.... OUCH!!! We don't have any regrets about doing what was necessary to make sure both dogs got a second chance in wonderful homes, but we will need help to get these bills paid in case another "curve" comes our way.

Handsome Banjo!
| Some very good news this past April was that DUSTY was adopted! Super-foster Sandy B. decided her younger girl Sasha needed an equally young playmate... it seems to be puppy love for Dusty! Then ZIPPY also found his new home and they will support & love him throughout his recovery. Next, there was very good news for CHARLIE who was also adopted. Last, but not least, STANLEY went to his forever home too! Of course as dogs go out, dogs come in. Arriving to rescue are BANJO, PATCHES, SPOTTY, and BILL-E... two senior, three heartworm positive dogs. No big "curves" here, but we are getting dizzy. Our 2011 totals are 23 more Dals/dogs rescue over the 12 dogs we carried over from 2010. We have 20 adoptions this year and added 2 as care-for-life. We now have responsibility of caring for 31 Dals & dogs of which ANY or ALL could use SPONSORS! Your help is very much needed for us to give these dogs the care they so deserve.
The Dals & dogs still seeking forever homes are:
- Olivia: a small sweet girl from Jax who is almost ready for adoption after her risky heartworm treatment.
- Alanya: a big Dal-mix gal from Collier who is finished with HW treatment and ready for a new home.
- Oliver (Ollie): a 8-year-old Dal/Lab-mix who has begun HW treatment.
- Harley: a 8-year-old Dal/Cattledog-mix with hip dysplasia who returned to us , but now that he is back on his meds he is ready to be your boon companion.
- Stanley: a 3 year-old Dal/Pointer-mix from Wakulla.
- Freckles: a forced-surrendered, emaciated 7-year-old Dal from Levy County who had just eye surgery for entropian and is now gaining some badly needed weight.
- Blue: another forced-surrendered, emaciated 5-year-old Dal from Levy County who is in heartworm treatment.
- Bobbie: a 1-year-old with a shortened tail from Tampa who just loves people & has started her HW treatment.
- Kahuna: a young mix from Americus that is "the perfect dog".
- Banjo: a sweet senior heartworm positive Dalmatian in need of comfy home to live out his time .
- Patches: a 2-year-old, HW+ Pointer/JRT-mix girl from AL.
- Spotty: a young HW+ Dal-mix boy from Tampa.
- Bill-E: a handsome & talkative 9-year-old Dal boy found stray in Miami

Bill-E would be happy to live with you!

Win a Lasting Memory of Your Dalmatian
One Lucky DRTB Dal to Win Personal Painting
 |
An example of one of Rich's paintings in progress features Raven, the handsome boy he just adopted through us.
|
Rich Newman, our founding webmaster and painter extraordinaire, has decided to expand his painting talents from aircraft to Dalmatians (or a mostly Dal-mixes) while benefiting DRTB at the same time. Rich's paintings of photo-realistic aircraft hang in homes across the country plus have been featured in numerous magazines and publications. His lifelong love of Dalmatians is pulling him towards a new adventure and one lucky Dalmatian will be the recipient!
Rich will paint a portrait of your beloved Dalmatian which will require at least two (no more than three) really good quality photos. The finished painting will be between 12" x 16" and 16" x 20". Normally Rich's paintings go for $200-$300, but this one will go for a $50 donation by the winner to DRTB!
At this time Rich is limiting his new venture to Dalmatians. If you are interested, please email daldoglady@netzero.net. We will throw all names into a hat and pick one lucky winner who will then work directly with Rich. PLEASE SUBMIT ALL NAMES BY MAY 20 TO BE INCLUDED IN THE DRAWING.
