A Poem to my Foster Dog
by
by Diane Morgan
I am the bridge Between what was and what can be. I am the pathway to a new life.
I am made of mush, Because my heart melted when I saw you, Matted and sore, limping, depressed, Lonely, unwanted, afraid to love.
For one little time you are mine. I will feed you with my own hand I will love you with my whole heart I will make you whole.
I am made of steel. Because when the time comes, When you are well, and sleek, When your eyes shine, And your tail wags with joy Then comes the hard part. I will let you go--not without a tear, But without a regret. For you are safe forever-- A new dog needs me now.

Hello Dal Lover!
April showers may bring May flowers, but for us it will mean more dogs coming our way. Sadly, many of the dogs being left behind these days are seniors.
So we're looking extra hard for "homes with big hearts". One such boy needing help is "Ollie". Found in Pasco County on the streets, life has not been kind to him. Loaded with heartworms, skin and bones, and teeth worn down to nubs. Pat H. pulled him out of the shelter so we could make his life better.
Now ready to go and despite his rough past, Ollie has the soul of the gentlest little warrior. He wants desperately to decorate someone's couch for the remainder of his time. He is so easy to love and care for. A little slow going but so happy just to be. Can you give him that forever home?
Special thanks to Linda B. for fostering him and Terrance for paying for his treatment.
"There is no faith which has never yet been broken except that of a truly faithful dog." - Konrad Lorenz

Event Volunteers NEEDED!
 |
Pet-a-palooza with Linda & Ollie
|
April is one of our busiest event months with many great events and opportunities to get our dogs adopted, plus we raise funds to help the dogs in our care. This month a family crisis has put us short a volunteer who works a number of these events. Additionally, we need volunteers to let us know if they can fit in a PETCO event sometime this month. Most events are easier to manage when you have 2 volunteers though some can be done solo. We are asking YOU if you can step into the breach and help us staff the events we have listed in our events column (that is the block to the left). We hope that things will become more normal by May which is less busy event month, but appreciate all the help we can get.
Above is a recent newspaper picture from a recent event. Steve is shown with DRTB's Milton, a 2010 save from a Santa Rosa shelter. Now, Does anyone want to do an Event at Jim's Harley Davidson in St. Petersburg on the 23rd???

So Many Dogs...
And so little time in which to save them.
 |
Our big Kahuna :D
|
While there are purebreds still to be found in local shelters and further afield, the Dal-mixes are the dogs most at-risk. While we know we can't save them all, we feel as a rescue we need to try to save whenever there is a chance. We hope you will share our otherly-spotted rescued fur-babies so that they too may find homes. Wouldn't you like a spot of a different kind?

The "Wild-child" Ollie
| Despite Susan spending her entire March in Boston in her quest to become a yoga instructor, we have managed to chug along like the little engine that could. We have had adoptions for four dogs this month. Ollie was an owner-surrender who lived without any rules in his backyard. With our help he found his safe new home where his wild-child ways will be better channeled into being a happy house pet. Then our Dolly, formerly of Lake County, found her special home with lots of entertainment. Our cutie patootie BeoWoof left us for his new home this month too, we knew he wouldn't be with us long.

Charlie want a home now...
|
Mid-month little Sunshine came to us from Miami-Dade and immediately had an adopter, however this poor girl has been very sick... only after the pull did we hear that MDAS had been shutdown due to a distemper outbreak. Please send your positive thoughts that this is only terrible kennel cough and that she will recover soon. As for other intakes; Della, a senior was place into a care-for-life home with Sharon. Thena big goof of a boy named Zippy out of Citrus County joined the DRTB pack. Last, but not least, came tiny Spirit an 8-year-old mini-Dal. He lost his home when his owner died. We think he'll find a home quickly once his infected skin heals.

Meet Zippy!.

Our 2011 totals are 18 more Dals/dogs rescue over the 12 dogs we carried over from 2010. We have 12 adoptions this year and added 2 as care-for-life. Sadly, we lost another of our Care-for-life dogs this month; Lucky Joy crossed the Rainbow Bridge so we currently have 18 dogs with CFL status. This leaves us with the overall responsibility of caring for 31 Dals & dogs, ANY or ALL could use SPONSORS! Your help is very much needed for us to give these dogs the care they so deserve.
The Dals & dogs still seeking forever homes are:
- Dusty: a Velcro 1-year-old GA Dal/Dane-mix boy who just wants someone to love and be by your side.
- Olivia: a small sweet girl from Jax who is almost ready for adoption after her risky heartworm treatment.
- Alanya: a big Dal-mix gal from Collier who is finished with HW treatment and ready for a new home.
- Oliver (Ollie): a 8-year-old Dal/Lab-mix who has begun HW treatment.
- Harley: a 8-year-old Dal/Cattledog-mix with hip dysplasia who returned to us , but now that he is back on his meds he is ready to be your boon companion.
- Stanley: a 3 year-old Dal/Pointer-mix from Wakulla.
- Freckles: a forced-surrendered, emaciated 7-year-old Dal from Levy County who had just eye surgery for entropian and is now gaining some badly needed weight.
- Blue: another forced-surrendered, emaciated 5-year-old Dal from Levy County who is in heartworm treatment.
- Bobbie: a 1-year-old with a shortened tail from Tampa who just loves people & has started her HW treatment.
- Charlie: saved from the Manatee shelter who need a special diet to keep him stone free, but is a total love.
- Kahuna: a young mix from Americus that is "the perfect dog".
- Zippy: A young Dal/Lab-mix from Citrus County who loves everyone.

A Soft Spot
Senior Dogs get new beds
We want to send our heartfelt thanks to a very kind person who found out about DRTB through the Grey Muzzles organization. Because of her, our seniors are sleeping much better these days! Karen made a wonderful donation of 6 foam beds in memory of her dog, Dice, this past Thanksgiving. We had meant to let you know about it much sooner, but there always seems to be a very needy dog in front of us.
Sandy B. received several beds for the seniors she cares for at what has essentially become DRTB's ALF (assisted living facility). Petey and Pongo (now over the rainbow bridge), two of her very old spots, made themselves right at home on these special beds made to help old bones lie in comfort. Then there was Francis (also recently over the rainbow bridge), who had been found staggering around on a golf course in Wesley Chapel in horrible shape. He also benefited from having a special bed. Thank-you Karen for caring about our senior dogs and another thank-you to Rick D. & Sandy for continuing to take on these very special dogs and giving them a comfortable place to live out the remainder of their lives. Last, but not least, thank you so much Grey Muzzles for the work you do on behalf of our special seniors. |
