YOUR "FOREVER HOME"

by

Gail Orth-Aikmus

We knew that you were special

We knew it was no lark

That you would need a special home

We knew it from the start

We put you on the internet

And then the search began

To find for you that special place

Your "Forever Home" to land

Time has passed but we think of you

And how you are in your new home

We sleep much better every night

We know you're not alone

Hello Dal Lover!

Susan all alone

In my 20+ years of rescuing Dalmatians, we have never come across one named "Susan". How very fitting that during the month I celebrate my birthday, our great team of South Florida rescuers saved this beautiful 11-year-old senior. Susan's owner died and she had to be taken from the house. As she lay shivering on the concrete floor, she must have wondered what happened to - and grieved for - her lifelong owner and home.

But now, thanks yet again to our wonderful support community, Susan has found a new forever home.  She has been taken in by Moms Gladys and Dori and Fur-sisters Patticake and Chrissy.  Look for the full story on our website soon!

"One reason a dog can be such a comfort when you're feeling blue is that he doesn't try to find out why." - Unknown

Can you please be Bobbie's foster home?

Bobbie

Cute little Bobbie is in need of a foster home. When we pulled this young lady from Hillsborough Animal Services, we found she also came with heartworms. She is currently a guest at Paw Prince, but needs to be in a home so she can go through heartworm treatment in a quiet environment. It would require an approximate 45-day commitment.

We REALLY need your help so we can get her closer to finding her a forever home. If you can help or know anyone who can PLEASE let us know ASAP! You can reach us at daldogrescue@yahoo.com.

Who Let the Dogs Out???

Raven
Raven with his new Daddy, Rich.
DRTB, of course! Seems like all we have been doing this month is getting
at-risk dogs out of shelters and attempting to find new homes for them. For five we managed just that! Yoda, who had a massive limpoma removed from his back, has gone to live permanently with super-supporters Pam & Ron I. in Spring Hill. Then when we heard that Rich N. (our past webmaster who just said goodbye to 2 of his oldest spots) was ready for another Dal we located Buddy, an 8-month-old pup in Mississippi, who needed a new home. Our wonderful transporters went to work to make it happen. Buddy, renamed Raven, is now helping Rich through his losses. Of course, there is Susan who you read about above and who found refuge with Gladys & Dori. They will be the best medicine for her grieving heart. Orphan Annie finally trekked her way to us from Texas and was quickly adopted by Debbie S. the winner of "a Latte for Life" drawing. Lastly, another one of our Georgia Peaches named Princess, was rescued and nearly immediately adopted by a woman who had met her at the shelter before we arrived.

Charlie

Charlie is ready to go now!

Now for all the rest of the new dogs that came our way this month! In came Bobbie a young HW+ girl, then there was Charlie a deaf boy who once been through stone surgery, wild-child Ollie who spent his first year outside running amok, and there is Kahuna who zipped in from Americus. Charlie has an adopter waiting so his journey to a new home begins early in March, as does Ollie. We are just keeping ahead of the game with adopters/donations.

Our 2011 totals are 18 more Dals/dogs rescue over the 12 dogs we carried over from 2010. We have 12 adoptions this year. We lost another of our Care-for-life dogs this month; Lucky Joy crossed the Rainbow Bridge so we currently have 17 dogs with CFL status. This leaves us with the overall responsibility of caring for 31 Dals & dogs, ANY or ALL could use SPONSORS! Your help is very much needed for us to give these dogs the care they so deserve.

The Dals & dogs still seeking forever homes are:
  • Dolly: from Lake County, a mostly Lab-mix with spots who wants her new home... and she may have found one!
  • Dusty: a Velcro 1-year-old GA Dal/Dane-mix boy who just wants someone to love and be by your side.
  • Olivia: a small sweet girl out of Jax who begun her risky heartworm treatment.
  • Alanya: a big Dal-mix from Collier who is finished with HW treatment and ready for a new home.
  • Oliver: a 8-year-old Dal/Lab-mix who has begun HW treatment.
  • Harley: a 8-year-old Dal/Cattledog-mix with dysplasia who returned to us and is now kept up on his meds.
  • BeoWoof: a 8-month-old memorable Dal/Sharpei-x from Miami... what a charmer.
  • Stanley: a 3 year-old Dal/Pointer-mix from Wakulla.
  • Freckles: a forced-surrendered, emaciated 7-year-old Dal from Levy County who needs eye surgery for entropian.
  • Blue: another forced-surrendered, emaciated 5-year-old Dal from Levy County who needs heartworm treatment.
  • Bobbie: a 1-year-old with a shortened tail from Tampa who loves people & needs HW treatment.
  • Charlie: saved from the Manatee shelter & has an adoption pending.
  • Ollie: an owner-surrender found "free" on craigslist. He spent his entire life outside without rules, but with training he'll be awesome.
  • Kahuna: a young mix from Americus.
Alanya

Alanya say, "Pick me!"

We list all our adoptable dogs on www.Petfinder.com. PLEASE let us know if you can help these dogs with a loving home or getting them to events so that they might get adopted!
In Memory

Waldo

Waldo & Carole, the beginning.

We are always saddened when we hear one of our rescued dogs has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. This month we received 2 memorial donations from supporters. One from Carole B. in Memory of Waldo, our Florida dog who moved to Canada. Adopted in 2007, at the age 13, he gave her 3 more years of love and is dearly missed.

The other memorial was from Bob H. in Loving Memory of his Dalmatian, Lady. Bob adopted Lady from us in March 2004. He said, "she was very, very special" and she gave him a great 7 years.  She too is very missed.

Thank you to both of you from all of us for giving them a wonderful second chance at life and to help us give another spot the same second chance as your beloved dogs.

Freckles & Blue Update

Our Starvation Case Dals

We can tell you that both Dals are improving, but it is a slow road to recovery.

Freckles recoveringFreckles, the Dal who appeared worse for wear, has started to gain weight. He was originally weighed in at 43 pounds and is now up to 49.6 lb, but is still woefully thin with ribs and hipbones showing everywhere. Poor boy pees in his kennel every few hours, probably because he eats so much to gain the weight and then becomes extra thirsty. The excitement of actually having someone come care for him is more than he can holdout against. It has been decided that Freckles will be getting his eye surgery on Thursday since the entropian condition has not resolved.

Blue recoveringBlue, who appeared much better, is no weighing 51 pounds, which is up from his original 46 lbs. He is really looking quite well; the sores on his hips are getting better. He has improved enough to start his course of heartworm treatment on Wednesday.
