A Dog's Soul

Every dog must have a soul

Somewhere deep inside

Where all his hurts and grievances

Are buried with his pride.

Where he decides the good and bad,

The wrong way from the right,

And where his judgement carefully

Is hidden from our sight.

A dog must have a secret place

Where every thought abides,

A sort of close acquaintance that

He trusts in and confides.

And when accused unjustly for

Himself, He cannot speak,

Rebuked, He finds within his soul

The comfort he must seek.

He'll love, tho'he is unloved,

And he'll serve tho'badly used,

And one kind word will wipe away

The times when he's abused.

Altho' his heart may break in two

His love will still be whole,

Because God gave to every dog

An understanding Soul!

Hello Dal Lover!

And 2011 is off with a roar, or in our case, a really loud barking Dal. Our Events season has kicked off with are very successful 2nd Annual Rally to Rescue. Please take a look at the UPCOMING EVENTS box to the left and let us know if you can help out at an event. Getting the dogs & the rescue seen is a very important part of what we do. Fund-raising is another component and we could really use some added help rounding up items for the Get Rescued in Gulfport silent auction held at their evening event.

We would like to thank Joyce D. who blew us away with her grant & PETCO who surprised us with a wonderful donation from their Breeds in Need fundraiser. If you read the article below we'll tell you how your funds are used to help the dogs.

"The greatest pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too." - Samuel Butler

Do Any Of Your Ex's Live In Texas?

Orphan Annie TXBeautiful 3-year-old "Orphan Annie" was found wandering in a cemetery in North Texas. Thankfully, a good friend of DRTB's took her into their sanctuary. Since they knew we specialized in placing Dalmatians, we were contacted to help. Annie is totally vetted and ready to find a forever home.

We REALLY need some help getting this sweet girl to Florida where we know we can find her a forever home. If you know of anyone that Annie can hitch a ride with, please let Susan know ASAP at daldoglady@netzero.net.

Eleven Rescues Start off 2011

Freckles

Freckles wonders, "How could they???"

And we thought last year was busy! We have had a lot of dogs on the move this January. We had 4 dogs return to us for a multitude of reasons plus another 7 were in need of our help. Thankfully some have already found homes, but others are going to be special needs and require a lot of our resources like starved Freckles with entropian, or heartworm positive Blue, or Yoda who has a mass on his back that will need serious attention.

Stardust

Stardust looks forward to a bright new future

We started off our adoptions
with Walter who joined Wendy in his new home with Barb. The Cherokee's adoption became final. Rascal/Guapo didn't stay long the second time around. He found a wonderful home north of Tampa with a great family and kids to play with him. The family vote renamed him Domino. Leila became a permanent member of the McLaren pack. She joins our Maya in house where the spots rule. Rich, our past webmaster, decided it was time again to add a spot to his home so cute little Buddy was transported from Mississippi to be his new best friend. Bo/Goku, another returnee was adopted into a home in Hudson where he can get the one on one attention he craves. And lastly, Stardust a Dal in Georgia found her new home. There are still a few  other Dals with homes awaiting them and we expect to complete those in the next month.
BeoWoof

BeoWoof is quite the charmer!

So to start 2011 we rescued 11 more Dals/dogs beyond the 12 dogs we carried over from 2010. We have 7 adoptions on the year, with 10 dogs that will be/become available for adoption.  We lost 2 of our sweet senior Care-for-life spots this month (Francis & Van) and added Enki making it 18 dogs with CFL status. This leaves us with the overall responsibility of caring for 32 Dals & dogs, ANY or ALL could use SPONSORS! Your help is very much needed for us to give these dogs the care they so deserve.

The Dals & dogs still seeking forever homes are:
  • Dolly: from Lake County, a mostly Lab-mix with spots who finished HW treatment and wants her new home!
  • Dusty: a Velcro 1-year-old GA Dal/Dane-mix boy who just wants someone to love and be by your side.
  • Olivia: a small sweet girl out of Jax who begun her risky heartworm treatment.
  • Alanya: a big Dal-mix from Collier who is finished with HW treatment and ready for a new home.
  • Oliver: a 3-year-old Dal/Lab-mix jwho has begun HW treatment.
  • Harley: a 8-year-old Dal/Cattledog-mix who returned to us when he was kept up on his meds.
  • BeoWoof: a 8-month-old memorable Dal/Sharpei-x from Miami... what a charmer.
  • Stanley: a 3 year-old Dal/Pointer-mix from Wakulla.
  • Freckles: a forced-surrendered, emaciated 7-year-old Dal from Levy County who needs eye surgery for entropian.
  • Blue: another forced-surrendered, emaciated 5-year-old Dal from Levy County who needs heartworm treatment.
  • Yoda: A 5-year-old liver Dal from MDAS who has a mass on his back that needs serious attention.
Stanley

Stanley is seeking his Livingston, could that be you?

We list all our adoptable dogs on www.Petfinder.com. PLEASE let us know if you can help these dogs with a loving home or getting them to events so that they might get adopted!

Yoda needs help

Our newest arrival is Yoda who has a mass on his back that will be evaluated later this week. Please keep him in your prayers.

Spots From The Past

Abby 2004We never get tired of hearing about Dals that we have adopted over the years - wondering how they and hoping that they are enjoying a much better life than when we found them. It was a pleasure to get this recent email from Jeffrey:

"Just wanted to update you on Abby. My little girl continues to be the best dog that anyone can wish for. She is coming around to her 11th birthday. Just wanted to say hello".

Abby was adopted by Jeff through DRTB in July of 2004. She was found as a stray by Hillsborough County Animal Services. She had one of the worst cases of heartworm that Dr. Hong had seen along with a mean case of kennel cough. We hope that her past 6 years with Jeff have made up for the neglect she suffered in the first 4.  This is what rescue is all about and why we keep going day after day, year after year. Thank you Jeff!
"Where Your Money Goes" (We Like To Think Flows)

We so appreciate each and every one of you who contribute to the saving of the spotted ones. There are many places to donate your hard earned money and we appreciate the trust you have put into our work in rescuing as many Dalmatians and Dal mixes as we can.

First off, please know that we continue to be in good standing with the IRS and have filed the required information in order to keep our 501(c)(3) status for 2011.

21010 Expenses Chart

To let you know how your money is used, here is a breakdown of 2010 expenses:

  • 3% goes to office & event supplies, administrative costs
  • 5% goes to food/treats for our dogs, foster & care for life - thankfully Purina ProPlan donates a pallet twice a year!
  • 9% goes to miscellaneous help like paying a pet deposit for a senior dog to keep him with his owner who lost their home, transport fees, shelter pull fees, etc.
  • 15% goes to caring for our foster dogs - medicines, supplements, supplies, etc.
  • 54% goes for veterinary treatment of both foster and care-for-life Dals
  • 14% goes to boarding fees while waiting for foster homes to open up

As you can see a full 97% goes directly to the dogs. We are very proud of that fact and will continue to use your donations effectively and efficiently. Thank you again for your trust in DRTB!
