Meet Oliver - Our Last Save of 2010
Poor boy was shaking like a leaf.
Somehow this little guy ended up on the streets of Pasco as a stray & no one came to claim him. He was in such sad shape that the shelter thought he was old and was prepared to euthanize him. Lucky for us, one of the techs at Pasco Animal Control once worked for our vet and knew of DRTB's efforts. She pleaded with them to give us a call and give the spotted boy a final chance. She knows we take hardship cases if the dog has a good temperament and quality of life is still good.
We operate almost always in an emergency mode fighting against a ticking time clock that will mean the death of a dog we are trying to help and this case was no different. Thanks to Pat Hose for dropping everything and running up to the shelter with an hour to spare. She took one look and determined we needed to get Oliver out of there. But having no foster home, we had no place to take him until he had at least minimum vaccines in order to be boarded. With great reluctance she had to leave him behind which broke everyone's heart - but we did commit to saving him and would get him after the holidays. If you have never been, going into any shelter is such a heartbreaking experience to see all eyes just pleading for help.

Next twist - the manager emailed to make an exception to get him out earlier so Pat picked him up first thing Friday morning and took him to the vet. Now we know that Oliver is approximately 3 years old. He has heartworms along with other worms. He has a hematoma in one ear and is covered in flea dirt. All signs point to a complete lack of care over his entire life. He is thought to be a Dalmatian/Lab-mix with a wonderfully sweet temperament. And of course, no one made the effort to have him neutered.
So now our work for Oliver really begins. In order for us to get him started on heartworm treatment, we NEED A FOSTER HOME FOR HIM. Of course, this means another $500+ vet bill... but just look at that sweet face... how could anyone just leave him behind? Please help us make 2011 the first good year of "Oliver's" life better in any way you can.

A Record Year for DRTB Saving Lives!
2010 proved to be a record breaking year for DRTB, surpassing saves and adoptions in previous years. Last January started our year with 13 adoptions and if looks like December, a month generally slow for adoptions, will be our second best adoption month with 9 adoptions!
Rufus loves his new daddy :D
Pongo went to his new home in NC to join another 2010 DRTB save, Purdy. Wendy was next to be adopted by Barb, they had previously adopted DRTB's Cyrrus and Cricket... both recently crossed the Rainbow Bridge. The news gets better, Wendy will be getting Walter in the new year for a brother... lucky Dals! Then Rufus was adopted by Mark after an adoption attempt failed... we can see why Mark didn't let him go again. We had a wonderful surprise

with Apallo being adopted after months without an inquiry and an another great surprise when Marx was adopted. Both our deaf girls Maya II and Beba found homes this month. Ginger was adopted by an area vet and will have a lifetime health care plan after her rocky start. Finally, it is good news for Syd II who found a new home after traveling to Washington state.
Walter is ready to go!
We have a few other Dals with homes awaiting them. There is Cherokee who is on trial in a new home. Diamond will soon be adopted by Mellisa & Julian and join Molly & Cruz, 2 other DRTB saves. Linda has decided to fail fostering with Leila and joins Maya. Walter and Blaze have new homes as soon as they are free from their HW treatment.
As you read previously, we had to finish our year with an 11th hour save, Oliver. That means for 2010 we rescued 76 more Dals/dogs beyond the 16 dogs we carried over from 2009 (11 were adopted, 1 stayed with her family, and 4 became care-for-lifers) making a total of 92 dogs we helped this year! We gave 64 dogs new homes (2 were direct referrals to the shelter for adoption) and we added another 13 as care-for-lifers though 3 eventually crossed the Rainbow Bridge. It looks like we will be beginning 2011 with 7 adoptable dogs seeking homes plus 5 pending adoption making for 12 dogs carried into 2011. This leaves us with the responsibility of caring for 32 Dals & dogs, ALL could use SPONSORS! Your help is very much needed for us to give these dogs the care they so deserve.
The Dals & dogs still seeking forever homes are:
- Dolly: from Lake County, a mostly Lab-mix with spots who finished HW treatment and wants her new home!
- Dusty: a Velcro 1-year-old GA Dal/Dane-mix boy who just wants someone to love and be by your side.
- Olivia: a small sweet girl out of Jax who must undergo risky heartworm treatment.
- Alanya: A big Dal-mix from Collier who is currently in HW treatment and will be ready very soon.
- Hudson II: A beautiful 6-year-old male Dalmatian who is on meds for seizures.*** Hudson needs a foster so we can get his seizure meds regulated... he is having break-through seizures at the kennel! Please Help!***
- Rascal/Guapo: a cute 1-year-old Border collie/Dal mix that was just returned to us.
- Oliver: a 3-year-old Dal/Lab-mix just rescued needing HW treatment
Dusty & Guapo (Rascal) get down & play!
We list all our adoptable dogs on www.Petfinder.com. PLEASE let us know if you can help these dogs with a loving home or getting them to events so that they might get adopted!
