OLD DOGS DO NOT DIE

We have a secret, you and I,
That no one else shall know,
For who, but I can see you lie,
Each night, in fireglow?
And who but I can reach my hand
Before we go to bed,
And feel the living warmth of you
And touch your silken head?
And only I walk woodland paths,
And see, ahead of me,
Your small form racing wit the wind,
So young again, and free.
And only I can see you swim
In every brook I pass.
And, when I call, no one but I
Can see the bending grass.

for Waldo, Lysander, Chloe, & Isaac who all left us this month

Hello Dal Lover!

IT'S ALMOST HERE!!! Our Dal-loween Fest-Dal countdown has begun for this Oct. 23rd's event to be held at LAKE PARK. We have lots of fun times planned which you can read about below! Can't wait to see y'all there!

We'd like to send a special thanks to Cheryl Ware. Cheryl has again made some wonderful fleece blankets for our senior dogs to some add comfort and warmth for their achy bones. If we missed getting one to your foster please drop us a note.

"A dog is one of the remaining reasons why some people can be persuaded to go for a walk." -O. A.
Some Spook-tacular Treats for Dal-loween!

Dal-loween Festi-Dal lurks right around the corner! Our countdown is on, so please join us Saturday, October 23rd for our annual fundraising celebration of spots. We will be at Lake Park, 17302 N. Dale Mabry Highway in Lutz from 10a till 2p. The park's budget crisis hit us with a monstrous increase in shelter cost plus a $2/car park admission so we NEED your support more than ever to make this a success!

Quincy playing ball

To make this year's celebration the best one yet we have added some very special treats. We have live entertainment from The Wood Smoke Band, a blues-country-Americana band provided by Merna. Professional photographer Brenda Knoll is coming to take quality photos of your pets. Half of funds she generates will go to DRTB so maybe you'd like to get a jump-start on those Christmas gifts? We have added a new game called the Great Pup-kin Hunt that promises prizes for all. We also have our Costume Contest and games like the Pumpkin Dash, Bone Bob, Siren Sing-along, Best Trick for a Treat, Popcorn Toss, and Ghost Watch (a sit/down stay contest) with trophies & medals for prizes. There are silent auctions with dining, getaways, beautification, and other cool stuff. Plus we will do a 50/50 drawing to help put some dollars in a one lucky person's pocket in addition to our other drawings.

A Latte ~ A LifeA Latte~ A Life's winner will be drawn and announced during the picnic for the Carol Chretien painting "Wait, Love, Pray ...for a Home" inspired by Dusty who patiently waits on his forever home.

Please helps us by getting the word out, bring your friends and friends of friends! Post flyers wherever you can. Come on out and join the fun, strut your spots (and non-spots), make new friends, visit old friends, and have lots of fun all while helping us raise money to keep on saving even more spotted lives!

Their Faces Haunt Our Dreams...

LysanderAdoption rates have been slow for many rescues. We have been lucky to do 6 adoptions this month, however it was quickly offset by many new arrivals like Spotty, Leila, Hobo-Clay, Ruby Rae, Mia, Walter, & Champ). Spotty, renamed Lysander found a home, but sadly he didn't get to have it for as long as we would have wished. This poor Miami boy had some severe health issues so his new Mom decided it would be kindest to let him cross the Rainbow Bridge. Was it worth saving him? YES! He left with love and family who didn't abandon him when it got tough. We also learned that Rascal II & Milton had made other plans about finding new homes. Both boys managed to capture the hearts of their fosters and will be staying right where they are. It was great news for Chester who after 10 long and sometimes difficult months in rescue got his new home. Now he's having great adventures with his new Moms! Now the best news for last, sisters Daisy & Lily have been adopted TOGETHER! We worried we'd never find an adopter willing to take two adolescent dogs, but fate was kind and they both have a wonderful new family.

"Why did I end up in this place?"
Mia waits
We had our share of losses too. Not only did Lysander cross the Bridge, but also Sandy's Chloe developed an incurable bloat & senior Isaac was lost to a large cancerous tumor. Both passed over a single weekend, yet Sandy was still willing to foster Mia so we could save her. We just received news that a very dear, dear boy named Waldo we adopted out at Dal-loween in 2007 and then helped transport to Canada crossed over at age 17. He had the best mom in Carole who loved him absolutely.

Hobo asks, "Will you love me?"
Hobo
Thus far in 2010, we have rescued or helped 64 more Dals/dogs beyond the 16 dogs that we started with from 2009 (1 stayed with her family and 4 are became care-for-lifers). We have found new homes for 49 dogs (2 were direct referrals to the shelter for adoption) and added another 5 (maybe 6) care-for-lifers, ALL would love SPONSORS! Right now we have 35 Dals & dogs under our care that need your help too.

Those Dals & dogs in NEED of forever homes are:

  • Apallo: a 2-year-old Dal-mix in Jax with such a winning disposition you have to love him.
  • Marx: from Americus, a male 2 or 3-year-old loving goofball. He is a Pointer/Lab-mix who'd love to play ball with you!
  • Taffie: a ~1-year-old Whippet/JRT-mix sporting spots from GA. She wants to be your best girl.
  • Maya II: a beautiful, sweet, 6-year-old, deaf purebred surrendered by her owner. Her allergy symptoms have vastly improved with proper care and coat is looking lovely.
  • Dalton: from GA, a 2-year-old purebred Dalmatian boy now finished with heartworm treatment.
  • Dolly: from Lake County, a mostly Lab-mix with spots who finished HW treatment and wants her new home!
  • Dusty: a Velcro 1-year-old GA Dal/Dane-mix boy who just wants someone to love and be by your side
  • Quincy: from Hillsborough, another sweet, smiling, Dal-boy about 6 years old & finishing heartworm treatment... what a love!
  • Cherokee: also from Americus, is a young female Pointer/Dal-mix who wants an active lifestyle too!
  • Diamond: saved from Miami-Dade, is an older spotted love who can still steal hearts.
  • Petey: from Brevard, is an older boy who got rejected by his owner after he went stray... another loving Dal-boy.
  • Leila: also a lovely senior Dal girl from Miami-Dade in need of a home.
  • Hobo Clay: a Dal/Cattledog-mix surrendered to Clay County's shelter.
  • Ruby Rae: A Warner-Robins Dal-mixed pup only 6-9 mos old.
  • Mia: again a senior Dal girl from Miami-Dade who came to us covered in ticks.
  • Walter: a sweet senior boy left alone in a Jacksonville backyard, of course, he will have to be treated for heartworms.
  • Champ: A gorgeous purebred 4.5-year-old whose family is moving overseas.

We list all our adoptable dogs on www.Petfinder.com. PLEASE let us know if you can help these dogs with a loving home or getting them to events so that they might get adopted!
Upward Facing Dog Anyone?

yoga

My first passion in life will always be dogs....specifically saving as many of them as I can.  My new-found passion is yoga and I'm pleased to announce that we've found a way to combine both!  Having actively practiced Forrest Yoga for the past 5 years, I am now undertaking the challenge of completing yoga teacher training through YogaFit, commonly known as "yoga for the masses".

On Tuesday, October 19th I will be teaching two introductory classes at one of our volunteers Curves Studio in Northeast Bradenton.  The cost - a $5 donation to DRTB.  Classes will be at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.  The studio is located at 2711 Manatee Avenue in Northeast Bradenton.  For more information or to sign up, please call Carly at 941-746-5777.

Yoga provides so many benefits in these stressful days and times.....please come out and join us if you are in the area and enlist your neighbors and friends.  It will be good for those who practice and the homeless dogs who will benefit!

And of course, we want to see ALL OF YOU at our annual DRTB picnic on Saturday, October 23rd!

Thanks for your support,
Susan
