RESCUED HEARTS

Taking care of rescue dogs
Is something I do best.
I know because I've done it,
And I've surely passed the test.
The dogs I've bathed, the food I've fed,
The vacuuming I've done,
And all to watch a frightened soul
Sit dreaming in the sun.
My own dogs I've neglected,
But I tell them everyday
That I love and cherish each of them
Though a new dog's come to stay.
I know they understand this,
For in their eyes I see
The love that I have given them
Come shining back at me.
Some people think I'm crazy,
Some others think I'm great.
But very few can understand
What really is at stake.
If I can love and help a dog
To find a better way,
My own life is much richer,
I look forward to each day.
So now you know my secret,
It's there for all to see,
The love I give, the life I save,
I do it all for me.

Hello Dal Lover!

Spotted love knows no boundaries! Thanks to your support, DRTB has been able to help more and more dogs in desperate situations - as far away as Los Angeles. We thank each and every one of you who has supported our efforts. This month we want to especially thank the following:

Joyce Dennehy who has given us a special grant to help abuse case Maya and to help us pay to board Dals in need while waiting for foster homes to open up. We have been able to save 27 dogs in the past two years thanks to Paw Prince Pet Resort and Spa working with us. Now thanks to Joyce, we'll be able to save many more.

Renee White... thank you so much for your monthly contributions. The spots send you love and wags!

Audrey in Washington D.C. - we are grateful to you for sponsoring 12 year old Pecas, a deaf senior we just rescued who was dumped because she was "too old". She is battling kennel cough... a sad fate for so many dogs left in shelters. But we have faith she will pull through and live her life out with us.

Thanks for continually hanging in there with us!

Sweet Cammi needs a Foster

Can you help Cammi be less afraid???
Cammi

We rescued Cammi from a GA shelter she ended up in after being found running stray in rural GA. They weren't going to try to adopt her out because she wasn't pretty enough, but we disagree. While we don't know Cammi's past, it appears to have been one full of neglect where she was beaten. Cammi is fearful of people upon first meeting them or when she goes anywhere new. We learned she is also afraid of storms.

Cammi is a very submissive girl who loves other dogs, a perfect home for her would be a quiet one with another dog. Cammi is approximately 6 years old and a Dal-mix (maybe with hound). She is petite at around 35 pounds. We had her checked over and she is healthy, but needs a lot of love to feel secure. Cammi adores belly rubs.  Currently, Cammi is being boarded at Paw Prince's kennel, which is a big expense for DRTB. We think she needs a very special home to learn not all people want to hurt her and to help her build her confidence so that we can find a permanent place for her. Can you be the one to make her feel safe again?

Wouldn't you like to put a smile on Cammi's face???

It's DRTB to the Rescue...

Maya's living conditions before rescue
Maya's Rescue
Sometimes signs of neglect or abuse aren't obvious, but if you look at this picture of poor Maya's living conditions that was taken at the time of her rescue, you'd know something was terribly wrong. Horribly emaciated, without any shelter or shade within her reach, no food or water until a neighbor brought her an orange bucket of water and food dish, and a chain that kept her tethered to her misery inside the dirt circle she paced. Her physical condition was dire, as she required immediate treatment for a severe case of heartworms.

Her life had no hope except for rescue... which is where we came in. Judy F. is an amazing foster in Homosassa that has taken on Maya's rehabilitation. Maya has gained weight and begun treatment for heartworms though her treatment is high risk. Maya has had to relearn house-training and her previous life has left her quite anxious. It is hard work for a foster and Judy has done her best with the situation. However, it would be a great help if some volunteers would be able to give Judy some relief. Please email daldogrescue@yahoo.com if you can lend a hand.

Maya at in-take & severely underweight.

On the brighter side, we had several adoptions this month. Little Amber finally found her new home complete with laps for cuddling. Velcro boy Pongo got his wish for a forever home too. Shiloh has been adopted and renamed Pearl. And our little media darling Hudson was just adopted after the Expo. We also added Pecas to our Orcas Island Sanctuary.

So far in 2010, we have rescued 26 new Dals/dogs beyond the 16 dogs we had from the previous year (1 stayed with her family and 3 are now care-for-life). We have found new homes for 24 dogs of which 1 was a direct referral to the shelter for adoption and added 3 more care-for-lifers. Currently, we have nearly 30 Dals & dogs under our care.

Those Dals & dogs that are still seeking forever homes are:

  • MilkNCookie from Jax a 10 year old
  • Prudence a 7-9 year old girl now ready for her new home
  • Chester a 3-year-old Dal-mix boy out of Orange County free of heartworms & ready for a home
  • Panda a special needs girl with bad knees from Citrus County who is ~6-years-old
  • Halligan a 6-year-old who was surrendered to a shelter because the family "downsized" their dogs because of another baby... Hallie shed :(
  • Maya a young abuse-case from Citrus County who is now undergoing heartworm treatment & rehab
  • Savannah a 3-year-old  Dal-mix from Brevard
  • Molly from Polk is 2-3 years old an looking for a family with kids and a playmate
  • Pepper a cute, 7-month-old Dal-JRT mix from Americus
  • Marx a young HW+ male
  • Cammi, a GA Dal-mix deemed unadoptable because she wasn't "pretty enough"
  • Rascal, a young 5-month-old maybe Border Collie/Dal-mix... he's really cute
  • Apallo from Jax is now free of heartworms and looking for his forever home
  • Taffie a 7-month-old Whippet/JRT mix with spots from GA
Apallo (not a typo) is such a happy boy!
Apallo
We list all our adoptable dogs on www.Petfinder.com. We also have additional courtesy posts for:
  • Carter, a young American Bulldog
  • Tuck, a 14-month-old Dal/Am Bulldog seized in a neglect case
PLEASE let us know if you can help these dogs with a loving home or getting them to events so that they might get adopted!
An EVENTful Month!

MaryEllen, Savannah, Frank, & Hudson are ready to
"Let the Sunshine In"!
On stage at Hair
It seems like DRTB was on the go all month long trying out some unique pet events. We participated in the first Talking Animals Festival held at Lowry Park Zoo that was well attended. The New Barker Magazine invited us to join them at The American Stage in the Park's Presentation of HAIR. It was the first time they allowed pets to attend. We had a real groovy time with Mary Ellen and her foster Savannah & Frank who brought little Hudson. Both dogs were well behaved, though Hudson wanted to chime in  and sing chorus!

Media darling Hudson
got another 5 minutes of fame doing a promo spot for TampaPets! Adoption Expo at Channel 28 (Hallie got her moment of fame with Q105). It was fun to get a glimpse behind the scenes of a TV news broadcast. Cutie Hudson got up close & personal with the news desk anchors, John Thomas, & Ellen McNamara. Later he joined Kelly for her interview with weatherman Bill Logan. Now if we can only convince him not to chew the set on camera!

You never know what path rescue will lead you!
