There's a Dalmatian in my Lunchbox

by Michelle Whennan

There's a dalmatian in my lunchbox
And he's got me hopping mad
Cos when I checked this morning
There was only bread and jam!

He's squashed my nice banana
And melted all my cheese
He's licked up all my yoghurt
And my biscuits now have fleas!

Now he's sitting there grinning
Just wagging his white tail
Doesn't he know he's a sandwich thief
Who should go straight to jail?

He doesn't seem to understand
This is no place for a dog
Amongst my cheese and yoghurt
And Mum's homemade honey log!

I'm so perplexed, I don't know how
There suddenly came to be
A dalmatian in my lunchbox
Smiling up at me!

Hello Dal Lover!

What an amazing way to begin our new year. We had a record number of dogs go to new homes in January, young & old dogs alike. Still there are more out there to be helped and with your support our goal is to help as many as we can.

We also want to thank some generous supporters like Alison B. & Ron E. plus Karen H.for their donations. We want to recognize the support of Purina ProPlan's Rally to Rescue program that supported our DYO Rally this month that resulted in about 20 dog adoptions. And we want to say "Happy Birthday" to Annie's mom, Noreen, who chose to accept donations for our dogs over gifts for herself on her special day. What a great way to help the dogs! Now everyone, get out there and throw a PARTY for the dogs!!!

"My love, a love that's through and though. For my loyal friend, my dog, that's you."
Happy Valentines Day to Everyone!

We are delighted to share with you the news that we had 13 adoptions in January.....a record breaker for DRTB! We continue to be hopeful that more and more people will choose the "adoption option". In our newsletter and on our website you will see ongoing happy endings of many of the 90 lucky spots that got saved in 2009.

Readying these dogs for adoption is often times pretty costly. We try and keep our adoption fees at an acceptable level that means in almost every case, we spend more that the fee. In addition to those we place up for adoption, we continue to get more and more pleas for senior dogs whose owners can no longer care for them or cannot afford vet care. We place as many as we can, look for long-term fosters for the others and in a few cases help get much needed vet care the owners can't afford. This is also a costly endeavor but one we feel these old spots deserve. It is so sad to hear from owners who desperately love their dogs but can't get them the vet care they may badly need.

In 2009, through grants, fundraisers and your individual donations, we were able to take in $34,113. Our expenses outweighed our income at $36,519. As you can see we run a very tight budget but are proud of the fact that over 90% of our donations go directly to our rescues care. Thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers, we spend very little on administration costs.

So many more Dals are out there waiting for our help. We know times are tight for everyone but hope that we can continue to count on you for your support. If you can't afford to donate financially, maybe you can volunteer your time to help us at events. If you can't take on another full-time dog, consider fostering an adoptable one or one that needs to be taken through heartworm treatment. Or if you are the creative type, maybe you can make something we can sell.

We'll keep working as hard as we can......please keep working with us! Thank you so very, very much.

Susan
Our Lucky 13!

Panda Sit
WOW ... what a month for DRTB! We managed a whooping thirteen adoptions this month. It must be a record for us. Howie J., Apollo, Hope, Liberty, Cotton, Katie, Wally, Isaac, Mota, Lulu Lemon, Lucy, Precious, & Oreo Sr. all found new homes this month! Plus Abby's family decided against re-homing her. We also gained a special addition named Panda for the way she sits. Panda's back legs are rigid & bowed, but this girl has a lot of Dalmatian determination and get up & go. A real sweetheart of a dog.
                                                                  Our Panda!

To date in 2010, we have rescued 7 new Dals/dogs beyond the 16 adoptable dogs we carried over from the previous year. We have found homes for 13 of those dogs of which 1 was a direct referral for adoption. Currently, we have 20 Dals & dogs under our care. Those that are still seeking forever homes are:

  • Biff a small, but lively 8-year-old Dal-mix
  • Cody a 9-year-old senior Dal from Polk County
  • McKenzie from Citrus County a bouncy Dal/Boxer-mix
  • Amber from Lake County, a Dal/Pointer-mix who just wants a lap & to cuddle
  • Buddy a 9-year-old Dal left to die in a garage in south Florida
  • MilkNCookie from Jax is 10 years-old & HW-
  • Prudence a 7-9 year old girl ready for her new home
  • Chester, a 3-year-old Dal-mix boy out of Orange County with heartworms
  • Panda a special needs girl from Citrus County is ~6-years-old.
Panda Stands
I can really move fast if you show me where you hid my treats!

We list all our adoptable dogs on www.Petfinder.com. We also have additional courtesy posts for:
  • Finster, a Rotty-mix, who resides with Lee S. in Homosassa Springs
  • JLo, an AmStaff girl, here in the Tampa Bay area
  • Magnum a nearly year old Lab-mix near Jacksonville
  • Carter, a young American Bulldog, also near Jacksonville
PLEASE let us know if you can help these dogs with a loving home or getting them to events so that they might get adopted!
