Christmas Dog

by Shel Silverstein

Tonight's my first night as a watchdog,
And here it is Christmas Eve.
The children are sleeping all cozy upstairs,
While I'm guardin' the stockin's and tree.

What's that now---footsteps on the rooftop?
Could it be a cat or a mouse?
Who's this down the chimney?
A thief with a beard--- And a big sack for robbin' the house?

I'm barkin', I'm growlin', I'm bitin' his butt.
He howls and jumps back in his sleigh.
I scare his strange horses, they leap in the air.
I've frightened the whole bunch away.

Now the house is all peaceful and quiet again.
The stockin's are safe as can be.
Won't the kiddies be glad when they wake up tomorrow
And see how I've guarded the tree.
Hello Dal Lover!

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or another holiday this season we wish you all the happiest of the season and hope that in your celebrations you can include the Dals & dogs.

We also want to send our deepest thanks to the PEDIGREE Foundation for their Dogs Rule Grant and again to the Ahimsa Foundation plus PETCO Foundation for their contributions to keep us helping the dogs we love.

"The gift which I am sending you is called a dog, and is in fact the most precious and valuable possession of mankind" - Theodorus Gaza
Smooches from the Spotted Sanctuary Pooches!

We Three Pooches

2009 has been an especially hard year for DRTB given the amount of Dalmatians in harms way due to the economy. Shelters and rescues are all over-flowing and looking for any means to help save just one more life. Many senior Dals are ending their lives out on the streets.

We thank you for once again helping us survive in these trying times with your donations. We've had cries for help beyond our normal reaches ... even one very sad person who emailed begging for help to have their Dalmatian of 15 years euthanized humanely at a private vet rather than having to dump him at a shelter after all those years. When their own vet wouldn't even help them with the costs or a payment plan, we were able with Dr. Hong's help, to step in and end Maverick's suffering and make his last minutes on earth peaceful ones. It was our gift to a precious spotted boy who needed us.

Our Christmas wish is to continue our help to the abandoned spots for yet another year and that you will join us again in doing so. May you have a safe, healthy and joyous holiday season.

A Home for the Holidays???

It is nice receiving gifts during the holidays, but what better gift for could there be than giving a home to a dog that has none? It is what we wish for the most. Dogs that got their wish granted in November are sweet Lady, Holly a deaf girl, Jemma who found love in Louisiana, Diamond who was adopted by her foster (Yay Amy), Lucy who was a direct adoption, and senior Kobi aided by Laura M. in Fort Walton Beach.

Kobi
Kobi looking for his new home... he found it!

To date in 2009, we have rescued 66 new Dals/dogs beyond the 17 we began the year with to include 2 dogs that returned to rescue. We have found homes for 53 dogs plus 6 direct referrals that resulted in adoptions. Currently, we have 30 Dals & dogs under our care. Our Dals & dogs that are still seeking forever homes are:
  • Eden a 9+ year old from Collier County now looking someone to call her own
  • Spooky a very handsome senior boy found abandoned on Halloween
  • Biff a small, but lively 8-year-old Dal-mix
  • Howie J. a returning 6-year-old Dal-mix with allergies
  • Cody a 9-year-old senior Dal from Polk County
  • McKenzie from Citrus County a bouncy Dal/Boxer-mix
  • Amber from Lake County, a Dal/Pointer-mix who just wants a lap & to cuddle
  • Buddy a 9-year-old Dal left to die in a garage in south Florida
  • MilkNCookie from Jax is 10 years-old & HW-
  • Abby, a 7-year-old, very plump liver Dal-gal who needs more exercise than her family can give her
  • Apollo a 13-year-old senior from New Orleans who needs a home with no small creatures
  • Hope an enthusiastic 11-month-old Dal-mix from Lake County
  • Prudence a 7-year-old girl getting TLC & currently in HW treatment
  • Kaspar a 5-year-old deaf boy from Tampa currently undergoing HW treatment
  • Pongo a 12-year-old senior out of the Miami area
  • Patches a 15-year-old senior girl who will be a care for life
  • Rouge a 2-year-old female victim of a divorce.
Plus we have a female Dal poised to enter rescue on December 1st from Lake County! Would anyone like to bring these dogs home for the holidays?

We list all our adoptable dogs on www.Petfinder.com. We also have additional courtesy posts for:
  • Finster, a Rotty-mix, who resides with Lee S. in Homosassa Springs
  • JLo, an AmStaff girl, here in the Tampa Bay area
  • Magnum a nearly 8-month-old Lab-mix near Jacksonville
PLEASE let us know if you can help these dogs with a loving home or getting them to events so that they might get adopted!
Let's See What's Under the Tree...

We have a couple items we want to tell you about for your gift giving needs. On our DRTB auction site we will be running one more quick auction for a fun Dal cookie jar & leash holder and then on Dec. 6th we will begin auctioning the gorgeous 48"x48" quilt square of beautiful Dalmatians in red, black, & white that Amy made for us. It is quilted in bone-shaped stitches and the picture does not do it justice. Someone will very happy to find this under their tree.
