DOGS LIVE HERE
|
|
If you don't want to be greeted with paws and swinging tails
don't come inside because dogs live here.
If you don't like the feel of a cold nose or a wet tongue,
don't come inside because dogs live here.
If you don't want to step over many scattered toys,
don't come inside because dogs live here.
If you think that a home ought to smell of perfume,
don't come inside because dogs live here.
If you don't mind all of this,
you will be instantly loved when you come inside,
because dogs live here.

Hello Dal Lover!
Out from the frying pan & into the fire. While we have
always had dogs with health issues, we have just added to our burden by taking
on some dogs with some serious health concerns. Phoenix is still slow to
recover and Buddy's story just broke our heart. Then there was PJ whose family
struggled to pay for needed surgery to remove a toy that had obstructed his
bowel. It was expensive, but without it their beloved Dal-baby would have died.
It was the right thing for us to do. So now we ask, can you help us to keep
paying it forward???

realizing you will never own all the dogs you wanted to." -

A Buck CAN Change Their Luck
July has been expensive! Phoenix's emergency vet costs, PJ's
surgery, senior dog meds, boarding costs, and more. . . it has added up. We ALWAYS
have to look for money to care for the dogs. Here are a couple of the ways we
have tried to stay ahead of the bill collector! Pumper before he came to DRTB. Grants are a huge help in keeping us afloat. Joyce D.'s
foundation has been so generous helping us with critical needs dogs. One of her
grants covered the initial cost of Phoenix's emergency care, though this poor
dog is still racking up bills. We also applied and received a grant from the
Grey Muzzle organization. Their funds only apply to senior dogs, but with so
many older dogs under our care we were awarded a grant to help with some of the
special medical costs related to the senior dog. Pumper was our first
beneficiary. This old boy needed some medications to help his chronic ear
infections and anti-inflammatories to ease his aching joints. Other senior dogs
also are on medications for age related afflictions so the funds will also be
applied to keep them as comfortable as possible in their old age.
Volunteers Frank, Sherry, & Tracy at Happy Yappy Hour Fundraising
events can be the most fun way for us to gain financial help. Recently, we benefited
from a Happy Yappy Hour hosted by The New Barker at the Altro Posto Wine &
Cappuccino Caf in Dunedin. Funds were raised with raffle tickets and wine
sales. We also received some unexpected direct donations from supporters who joined
us at the event. We THANK Marilyn H., Mike & Julia A., and Kathey W. for
their donations which paid the balance of Phoenix's emergency vet costs, though
Phoenix has more expenses ahead of her to get her well. We also have DAL-LOWEEN
coming up on October 17th. This is our biggest fundraiser of the
year so we look forward to lots of support and help from you to make it a
success. Please contact us at [email protected]
for ways you can help us save more dogs. |
Working at a Fever
Pitch!
While summer heat & humidity is enough to bring most
everything to a halt; dogs in dire need of rescue have not. Several Florida
shelters have shutdown due to outbreaks of disease, but there are some
dedicated animal control staff working feverishly to save those they can.
Shelters can rarely afford to treat any outbreak so many pets are euthanized.
We couldn't just stand by and watch dogs die this way... so now we have Lake
County Dal-mix youngsters Dane, Amber, and Nala! Added to our dogs is Pumper, a
very senior dog being fostered by Pam & Ron I. as a care-for-life. We saved
McKenzie, a Dal/Boxer-mix, who we boarded at Paw Prince until a foster became
free. Then came 9-year-old Buddy who with another dog had been left in a garage
to starve to death! He will probably be a senior sanctuary dog because of a
tumor in his mouth that we expect will prove cancerous. Our last intake this
month is Dolly, a Dal whose owner's never called to reclaim her despite a
microchip. Walt I. has given us his summer break to foster her. We are
expecting a handsome senior named Cleo to join us August 1 and Jay C. will
foster him near Jacksonville.
McKenzie
There was good news, as well as bad. Dogs that left for new homes were,
Hobbes, who came to us from Polk County. He was quickly adopted by a couple in
Lakeland. Then little Hunter found love and his forever home in south Florida.
Cocoa got his new adoptive family last week. Sadly, we had to say good-bye to 2
senior Dals. Yang crossed the Rainbow Bridge after suffering a stroke. Her
owner died early this year so she now joins him. Then Sister, a Dal saved from
starvation and Janet E.'s foster this past year, crossed the Rainbow Bridge the
morning of her father's funeral. Janet's prayer is that the two will keep each
other company in the afterlife.
To date in 2009, we have rescued 39 new Dals/dogs beyond the 17 we had from 2008
that include 2 dogs returned to rescue. We have found homes for 35 dogs plus 4
direct referrals that resulted in adoptions. Currently, we have 28 Dals &
dogs under our care. Dals that are still seeking forever homes are:
-
Oreo a loving, yet goofy,
